13. AKH writes of modern govt

“the absurdly wasteful, spendthrift nature of modern government, the swamp of waste, fraud, incompetence, malinvestment, patronage networks, worthless quangos and NGOs, costly political favours, disastrously expensive energy policies, the wasteful expansion of university courses and so on”

12. Toodles and that egg custard ice cream

“IYE mentioned egg custard ice cream. I know it well.

egg custard base — yes, I grew up with that. After the custard was cooked (boiled custard and do be careful not to scald) it was poured into a metal canister which was then placed inside a wooden crate and packed with ice and rock salt. The crank would be put in place and churning would then commence.

Oh, as I recall old terri towels/ cloths were placed somewhere and maybe old newspapers ( remember them) were placed underneath because of the wet. Humid here in middle of summer.

All the children wanted to participate in the manual cranking to churn up the eagerly anticipated ice cream. It usually was left to the boys because really after a few cranks enough was enough for my sister and me.

Eventually, we got the electric models. Still a mess, but well worth the efforts and the less effort to.  Ultimately my daddy and later Cuddles  was really in charge of the operation.

After the custard cooked  my mother sometimes put ripe peaches in it because my dad loved peach ice cream. Also, by doing that the almost too ripe fruit wouldn’t go to waste.

Freestone Chilton County peaches are even better than Georgia peaches which are spectacular. Chilton County’s are the ultimate 🍑 just as Videllia onions from Georgia are the yummiest of yellow onions! Silver Queen corn from Baldwin County is hands down the best people-eating-corn, as opposed to horse corn there is even though I am allergic.

Summertime corn is the best along with homegrown tomatoes which are so good together on the same plate.  If you don’t have homegrown then the FL panhandle is known to grow juicy flavorful  tomatoes.

Watermelon from over Grand Bay as cold as you can get it is, well, it is grand. A little seed spitting to add to the fun is well — it’s just great fun!

A few years ago we bought a similar type of model you have IYE. Before we even opened it I had to grab for a gift! It was wrapped and placed into the delighted hands of the receiver. I might just have to get another!

Andy,‘coconut ice sweet, it wasn’t soft like ice cream or frozen like a lollipop’

Well Andy ole chap! My dearest Cuddles would grin with delight for the 1930’s  coconut concoction! The man is not one who grins much, but coconut  brings it on. It is fun to be the one to get that going on his darling face!

Andy said:

‘All of that makes this place better that the best glossy magazine’

That is exactly how I have described the blog to my friends! They know you all by name and your general personalities!”

7. Dr. Rachel Nicoll at Lord Toby’s site

“This is a story about a medical inquest in a coroner’s court. They happen every day of the week. But this one has the potential to blow the whole of the end-of-life written and unwritten policy out of the water.

So far there have been three separate hearings for this inquest: in March, August and December 2025, and it’s not over yet.

Derek Dimmock, aged 86, was admitted to Royal Trinity Hospice in south London, on June 6th 2020 for gout treatment. Nevertheless, within three hours, a hospice doctor had assessed that he was “in the process of dying” and put him on a syringe driver (necessary for delivering intravenous drugs) and prescribed end-of-life drugs, including midazolam, alfentanil (for short-term pain relief) and oxycodone, a strong opioid.

Derek Dimmock quickly became comatose and died the following day.”
