Not sure which triggers youtube responds to in order to recommend clips but in the last two days, it’s been on about “managing your last years”, “managed decline” and so on. I was talking with MMutR and he virtually said I’d had a pretty good run in rude health … you wot? My longest friend of all time said a few decades back … you’ve always escaped from romantic entanglements … interesting, wasn’t conscious of it.

Anyway, went into youtube now to check what was on offer … it had the Jackson Browne number Running on Empty. As a person who knows little of leftwing or “modern” films, it had some graphics behind the song of some bearded man running on roads, down piers, whatever, running onwards etc. and suddenly I felt the old trigger warning of what I call “being railroaded”, being shunted into some final track.

I don’t want to call it “being sidetracked” as that implies an ego which supposes we’re too good for something else … that was never, ever my attitude … my attitude is always “that looks interesting” or meeting someone and enjoying that. If some force somewhere were trying to “close my account”, preventing good things, interesting things, I’d say sod off. Near the end of the song, this bearded one stops, turns and says, “I’m pretty tired, I think I’ll go home now.”

Clicked out instantly … no way, nowhere going near anything like that, still heaps to do … I interpreted that quote as shuffling off. No objections if Above says it, I just respond, “As You wish.” But if some earthly force was directing this … I’d be fighting with my last breath, e.g. digital ID, getting caught in the labyrinth of the medical world … that’s simply not going to happen. Do you remember that war vet some years back who escaped his maximum security “care home” and made it to Normandy to be with his mates?

No way anyone’s putting me in one of those, even if I have to climb through the third floor window and shimmy down the wall. The young folk on this landing are bemused when seeing me, think it’s marvellous, gives em hope. Well ain’t that nice.

Then there was that boys tended to be better at exams, girls at assignment work, that sort of thing. There were girls about, a minority still though.

Now that DEI has taken over, there are people in there who would not even pass Year 8 … and it’s a massive money spinner for baddies. As always, there’s a major difference between free enterprise … and Evil Capitalism. Universities should not have anything to do with egalitarianism … just merit. Also affordability. In my case, I had a scholarship but even so, struggled to make the quota.

2. For no particular reason but that I had the pic

… a tale from my youth. I’ll make it short, promise.

First, a crit of the pic … though I may well have been that lad … well turned out, polite but still unpredictable and never looking, starry eyed, at my mum, far more likely to give her a cuddle as a man would, also walking on the outside to protect her … still, it’s not a bad pic. Plus the bag is to be carried on the outside of the body.

Right, the tale. We were in a main street, I must have been about 6, we went into a store, maybe her hairdressers, can’t remember … she was off at that end of the shop and had said to me, “Go find the snack bar,” gave me the cash. I went up to the only counter, closer to the door, and asked the lady, “Do you have snack bars?”

“Er, sorry.” Now, whether she put the idea into my head to try to find one further down the main road, which was lined with shops … not sure, a bit hazy. Now we get to two truisms about men and boys:

• Males only remember that which they wish
• They generally can’t retain fine detail, except about interesting things
• On most things, they just don’t care … they can be thoughtless
• They never think to ask
• Yet they will try to carry out a promise, a commitment.

So, I left the shop, nothing much promising to the left, went right, wandered down … no bleedin’ snackbar … on and on … long story short … there was one of the overhead signs saying: “Snackbar.” Clearly the place, perched by the door and waited for her.

Typical woman … late, too busy with too much. After maybe fifteen minutes, I thought *&£&* this for a joke, so headed back to the shop. She was inside, distraught, shop personnel, manager, I think even a policeman. Apparently, there were people out looking. She came at me and did that embarrassing motherly thing, all sloppy like.

What’s the issue, thought I … why all this high drama? (Oh, and dear reader … if you think I’m going gaga, receding into oldtimer’s land … not today, bro.)

“On Thursday afternoon, 18 June 2026, at the Johnsons of Old Hurst family farm and zoo in Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire, England. A three-year-old boy was visiting the zoo when a 30-year-old man, who was a complete stranger to the child, allegedly hoisted the toddler over a four-foot fence and threw him approximately 15 to 20 feet down into a raised crocodile enclosure. The zoo owner’s wife, Tracey Johnson, heroically jumped into the enclosure alongside other staff members to rescue the boy. The toddler survived but sustained severe injuries from the fall and potential animal contact, leaving him in critical but stable condition at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge.

The 30-year-old “animal”, who travelled to the zoo from Norfolk, was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. Local media reports indicate that the suspect has severe learning difficulties and had been visiting the zoo with a carer, though the carer was not directly next to him at the exact moment of the incident. Following his arrest, Cambridgeshire Police explicitly stated that medical professionals assessed the suspect and deemed him “not fit for interview”. As a result, he has been released on bail until 18 September 2026 while police continue gathering evidence and speaking with eyewitnesses.”

Yes of course … isolated nutter. Sentencing will be simple … drop him to the crocodiles.
