There are two key versions of this on youtube which, imho, are the best going. One is the 1977 live version, showcasing not only Jackson Browne and his reddish brown hair (which incidentally was also my own colour in younger days, plus that of the ladies in Friday [4]) but also showcasing David Lindley on fiddle/violin … a marvellous version, a bit blurred visually now.
The other is below, a slightly shorter version with a (sadly) shorter outro and yet it’s the musically purer version, plus that wonderful album cover, a play on Rene Magritte, befitting these crazy times we’re in. Plus of course David Lindley’s haunting violin again.
JB was of course of the 60s/70s early Boomer left, as I later became, in turn, and the concerns then were warmongers, banksters, corporatists. The left were of course prone to violence themselves … Baader Meinhof, Weathermen, Bill Ayres, Obama later, Patty Hearst etc. etc. … they just did not wake up to the paucity of their ideological behaviour.
JB sings here of dreamers and other groups but could not have known about the horrible events westwide, culminating in the horror of Spain last night at Ceuta.
All of which could have been avoided, had people not turned their backs on their Maker and the Christian underpinnings of the west as it still was in the late 50s, a west the enemy is so desperate to kill off.
