Jon. During my time as an RAF Weapons Tech I became very familiar with the SLR. Gas block, barrel and locking block were about the only parts that I couldn’t replace. I left before the L85 turned up in the RAF, thankfully, but SLRs were still seen in Gulf War 1, which I attended in a civilian capacity. The fact that there was no need for an A2 upgrade says everything about it’s quality. There were plenty still with wooden “furniture” in RAF Armouries when I left.
Yep, my issue rifle had all wood furniture: butt, pistol grip, carry handle and foregrip. They used walnut because its as tough as old boots. Went everywhere with me, including in my sleeping bag 🙂
There wasn’t a lot of room in the old “Green Maggot”, but, been there, done that! I only got issued my own rifle for my last 3 years, so I had wood forestock and pistol grip, with a plastic butt for better adjustment and a “Hythe” rear sight. Because I could, I was the Armourer.
