(2003) In a break from HQ “tradition”, here’s a piece based on Ruairidh’s “Utopia”, concerning not just BA’s break from national tradition itself but the tale of the complete pig’s breakfast it became once its national identity died. Long ago, I was part of various educational curricula which sold a particular brand … a “British” education, and that included in other countries where it was known as EFL and other acronyms, complete with examination systems which the world valued.
Interesting, upon my return, to see that Jack Straw’s loathing for the “English” would be embraced by anyone at all within “England”, esp. those enjoying her benefits, along with Blair’s loathing, Brown’s, Sturgeon’s etc. History is history and the Irish and Scots do have a historical case imho, to be not all that enamoured of the English but then there was the Barnett formula and the West Lothian question, was there not?
It was the “British” army, it was pretty clear that the mass of regions within regions … well where is the line drawn? The line of national consciousness? Does this land really want another Wars of the Roses? Really? Another ’45? I only have one flag in this place, can’t remember where now but it’s the St George’s Cross. In day to day affairs, I’m mainly dealing with those thinking of themselves as British, though some think of themselves as Scouser or Mancunian or even Salopian.
Judging by the Scottish referendum, sufficient people subscribed to “Britishness” to make day to day living and travel, even fighting abroad a “doable” thing, a workable concept … it had been Rule Britannia ruling the waves rather than Rule Anglia, though in Russia I was called Anglichanan and the Americans keep using the term English … no argument from me but within these shores, British is a workable concept.
What it is not is a Caliphate, nor a type of Punjab and in fact, no one was more “British” than the non-Brit coming in through “the right channels” … Somerset Maugham touched on it all in Mr. Know-All:

I looked up the name Kelada … Egyptian, Indian, African, somewhere around there. The word “Chatham” for the Concorde’s livery was a black joke in itself … associated with destroying “Britishness” … ruled from Davos … yet the livery was readily identifiable as British.
What do you feel about Alice Weidel or Christine Anderson in Germany? I feel close to them, also Kassandra in Greece, Mandy Gall in Ireland … they’re loyal to their people … MAGA too. Subrosa in Scotland. Doonhamer, it goes on.
Those I feel not the least close to are those trying to wreck our respective identities, e.g. this EU excrescence. And the ones coming up with those awful tailfin designs for BA would have been better strangled at birth.
The Woke left mind virus is insidious, is it not? What you can never explain to them is that we’re already global in friendship on our side of the ledger, without claiming their land as part of some global, muddy mish mash mess. Artificial. Contrived. Like Net Zero.

Going to put an argument, then a counter-argument to it, then a counter of my own to that counter-argument. First, the argument (no names, twas on X, need to protect the poster):
Pretty good argument. All right, one commenter wrote no, never cash, faeces all over it, unhygienic and he had a good point too … think of the diseases now we’re third world, esp. in the metropolises.
I do have a counter-counter argument and that’s that I had an inkling they’d stop cash, but as I had some anyway, withdrawn from the bank in bits over time, used to pay small things like a cab fare, those notes came out of the machine the teller used, not from any shop. I give close to the amount and tell them to put any change in a charity box.
That still doesn’t protect us from third world and nu-yoof levels of hygiene but it’s the best, imho, that we can do.

Not the slightest disagreement about the way pollies operate, not the slightest disagreement with academic sociologists or even classic philosophers about all the truisms they cling to … quite rightly, as valid explanations, in the main, of what they observe. That’s certainly how it operates … money too in large quantities … the pushing of credit, debt, fiat money, the essential valuelessness of bonds.
And this is the issue … I agree with all that … but it’s not a zero sum game. After you’ve finished patiently laying it out and asking if I comprehend … yes I do. And do you, in turn, comprehend what physical and metaphysical means?
To head off on a tangent for a moment … I was looking at the Pettibone sisters (three of them will be back on Friday in place of Ladies at Lunchtime, which will then resume the Monday following), explaining what girls get wrong, including the mania for “independence”, the hookup culture, single men brought in to service single mums as and when, pushed by schools from above, through heads, through karen middle management, to young teachers, to peers, to the culture out there now.

All right, let’s come at this from another angle. Cobalt is an element and as one lady explainer put it … it is not part of arsenic but tends to “hang out” with it. They’re seen closeby quite often. There are superstitions, yes, and physical explanations, yes … and thinkers move into adversarial camps … always. Zero sum. I’m no way arguing for the presence of cobalt goblins but I’m certainly asking why superstitions arise in the first place? Ignorance only? Inability to clearly think?
Just saying there is very much a malevolent force or something which draws in and possesses … countless examples over millennia.
And after a deed … remorse, guilt, feeling of worthlessness. Why? Sheer coincidence? Come on … really? There is certainly a malevolent influence on this earth … it has the WEF in thrall, the upper echelons of the Templars, the Kali-ists, it reinvents as communists, anarchists, this cult, that cult, Jonestown etc. etc. … when humans are essentially left undefended, their defences now thrown away.
Humans do NOT rise to higher moral levels, no way. Think of the 1962 film Lord of the Flies. What’s all this depopulation too? Net Zero?
Human sacrifice, innit, for real … tricked out as something geophysical. Gaia.
How to stop this bollox? Only by each adult human in him/herself, finally tumbling to what’s been lost … causing a certain massed coming together in the way we think, unherdably, of each’s own volition, in each’s own time, when ready, on most issues … for a certain window of time. Such as with this MAGA landslide.
Everything has its season and if the window of opportunity to course correct is lost, the society is also lost.

For me in Russia, somewhere around the 10th, or if that was a Friday, then on, say, the 13th, it was back to work and that was that until Vosmoy Marta or March 8th Women’s Day. In the west, that is a non-celebratory day as it’s the day of communist feminazism, which Unherdables are against … but in Mother Russia itself, esp. after 1989, it became far more general for women, a revered day. Men’s Day is on Feb 23rd.
Though it was a bit of a downer after Jan 10th, the snow was usually still deep and crisp and even, so it was still a winter wonderland.
