In Britain, we used to tip if the service was good … mine ranged from 10% if not fab to 25% if it was very good. No tip if shocking, maybe more if the girl was assiduous BUT only if I could be sure it went to her, not to some group pool. I say ‘used to’ as I’ve not eaten out in Britain since maybe 1994.

In America, I realise the corporate greed game pays waiting staff pathetically, making it imperative they pick up tips no matter how the service is. This below though is well out of order … I simply would not enter that place, end of. Besides, I can cook better than medium level places at home.

Becca’s right here. Attitude is everything … attitude of all parties involved. I’d vastly prefer to invite her to my place, serve maybe tournedos rossini as the main, who knows about the starters, soup and dessert, cheeseboard. Then take her out to a concert, whatever, top of a tower for drinks. Still restaurant price that evening, but on things that are enjoyable.
