Portsmouth: Danny Tommo and about a thousand lads, reportedly, are up against it … this is a major invasion, a ferrying in by the authorities, boatloads coming in by stealth. Socmed is reporting it, it needs people down there. Local residents also joining in to stop the invaders getting to the waiting buses.
What a state of affairs. Word coming through that police are tear-gassing resisters to the invaders.
“A local Portsmouth grandma has canoed out to protesters in the water who are preventing illegal migrants from being unloaded onto the shores, and has given them supplies.”

I’ve never used floppy discs, but still have 5,6,7,10 & 20. As for #12 – I used to record the Top 40 and the Friday Rock Show (remember Tommy Vance?) onto reel-to-reel, then edit that down onto cassette. I now mostly rely on Google Earth for planning and a navigation app on my tablet for the actual journey. But still perfectly capable of following O/S maps, and they have contours which warn you that low gears may be needed ahead!

19. I got my first job in the big smoke in 1973. St. Albans was not exactly a commuter town in those days, only a few trains ran into St.Pancras. My first stop in London was at that café sorry a sausage in a roll and a mug of strong tea. I remember it well because it was where I saw my first cockroach. Incidentally, it was beneath St. Pancras station next to the ramp up from Euston road.

11. I have done or had them all.
Not only did I use a floppy disc like the one pictured, I also used the original 5 1/4 inch floppy disc that really was floppy – one with the program on went into the ‘B’ drive and the one you wanted to save stuff on went into the ‘A’ drive (or was it the other way round? It’s a long time ago…). And your file names could only be 8 characters long.
I got my first typewriter when I was 7 years old (a child’s plastic one, but it worked just like a ‘real’ one).
I learned to type properly at college on a manual typewriter, too.
I have several old film cameras, including one that was my grandmother’s. It still has a film in it (it seems to be right at the beginning of the film, so I don’t think there’s anything on it). It was before the 35mm film came out so it’s not the kind of camera you could slip in your pocket. I have an Olympus Trip camera too.
I still have cassette tapes with music on them (including one of my dad playing the keyboard), and a cassette player. And I think I may even have a blank tape or two somewhere. Don’t tend to sit by the radio recording stuff any more though!
I still have a Sony Walkman too, although to be fair, it was my mum’s and I got it when she passed away. In my youth I had a cheap imitation of the Walkman. I’d have had the real thing if I’d had the money.
Every long journey we take by car, I still feel the need to watch our progress on a paper map and enjoy it (sat navs and apps can still sometimes send you the long way round). We have several ordnance survey maps too – great for walks.
We still own a dictionary, and a set of encyclopedias (actually, two sets of different ones) and I still have a cheque book somewhere and still very occasionally pay for things by cheque. But I try mostly to pay for things with cash 🙂
Ah yes, those were the days. The worst thing is, it doesn’t really feel like it was all that long ago!!!
