(1630) Not far from evening all.
26. Last report for the night
Portsmouth: Danny Tommo and about a thousand lads, reportedly, are up against it … this is a major invasion, a ferrying in by the authorities, boatloads coming in by stealth. Socmed is reporting it, it needs people down there. Local residents also joining in to stop the invaders getting to the waiting buses.
What a state of affairs. Word coming through that police are tear-gassing resisters to the invaders.
“A local Portsmouth grandma has canoed out to protesters in the water who are preventing illegal migrants from being unloaded onto the shores, and has given them supplies.”
“Brunhylde”: “I have just been watching live footage, filmed from the Ferryboat Inn, Hayling Island, of these young, single men (no women, children or elderly observed) by Reform Councillors from Portsmouth and Havant, being landed quietly this evening, on the Portsmouth side of Langstone Harbour, via the Hayling Ferry pontoon bridge. They are embarking on multiple coaches, already alongside waiting for them. Well over 100 have been counted. They have been escorted around the Isle of Wight and are accompanied by Border Force and police boats. Civilian boats are being kept away. The police rammed one for getting too close. There is only one road in and out of the far eastern end of Portsmouth (Eastney). It’s currently blocked by hundreds of locals who will not let the coaches through. It could get nasty. Sadly, I can’t run anything live on any device I possess, nor cause you to watch live. This is an interim report:

11. Try these (I made mine 20)
… of course, that’s a damning admission.

11. All except 9, unless you count a small Phillips radio cassette recorder as a boom box or being forced to listen to someone else’s box.
I’ve never used floppy discs, but still have 5,6,7,10 & 20. As for #12 – I used to record the Top 40 and the Friday Rock Show (remember Tommy Vance?) onto reel-to-reel, then edit that down onto cassette. I now mostly rely on Google Earth for planning and a navigation app on my tablet for the actual journey. But still perfectly capable of following O/S maps, and they have contours which warn you that low gears may be needed ahead!
……
JH: No floppies? Where you binn, man?
19. I got my first job in the big smoke in 1973. St. Albans was not exactly a commuter town in those days, only a few trains ran into St.Pancras. My first stop in London was at that café sorry a sausage in a roll and a mug of strong tea. I remember it well because it was where I saw my first cockroach. Incidentally, it was beneath St. Pancras station next to the ramp up from Euston road.

JH: 🤪
11. I have done or had them all.
Not only did I use a floppy disc like the one pictured, I also used the original 5 1/4 inch floppy disc that really was floppy – one with the program on went into the ‘B’ drive and the one you wanted to save stuff on went into the ‘A’ drive (or was it the other way round? It’s a long time ago…). And your file names could only be 8 characters long.
I got my first typewriter when I was 7 years old (a child’s plastic one, but it worked just like a ‘real’ one).
I learned to type properly at college on a manual typewriter, too.
I have several old film cameras, including one that was my grandmother’s. It still has a film in it (it seems to be right at the beginning of the film, so I don’t think there’s anything on it). It was before the 35mm film came out so it’s not the kind of camera you could slip in your pocket. I have an Olympus Trip camera too.
I still have cassette tapes with music on them (including one of my dad playing the keyboard), and a cassette player. And I think I may even have a blank tape or two somewhere. Don’t tend to sit by the radio recording stuff any more though!
I still have a Sony Walkman too, although to be fair, it was my mum’s and I got it when she passed away. In my youth I had a cheap imitation of the Walkman. I’d have had the real thing if I’d had the money.
Every long journey we take by car, I still feel the need to watch our progress on a paper map and enjoy it (sat navs and apps can still sometimes send you the long way round). We have several ordnance survey maps too – great for walks.
We still own a dictionary, and a set of encyclopedias (actually, two sets of different ones) and I still have a cheque book somewhere and still very occasionally pay for things by cheque. But I try mostly to pay for things with cash 🙂
Ah yes, those were the days. The worst thing is, it doesn’t really feel like it was all that long ago!!!
……
JH: Wow!
Apologies for the no show over at NOWP, James. A friend called and he’s in a right pickle. He’s off grid, using a borrowed phone to ask for some help at his smallholding. Someone tried to steal his not-at-all road legal Series 2 Landy for the third time in a fortnight. He has a dozen uses for it, including emergency generator, and he can’t do without it. Hopefully we’ll catch the bastard and hogtie him for the police. See you later alligator 🙂
P.S. I have night vision equipment 😎

20. Did you catch this snippet?
“Update September 6, 2026: Several readers have informed me this is just a copy and paste of an Irish
case from 2020, where nurse Deirdre Morley allegedly smothered her three children and got off on an
insanity plea. The children there were named Conor, Carla and Darragh. The children in the Clancy
case are Callan, Cora, and Dawson. Wow….”
Those pesky clinks-dinks!
Coinky-dinks, if you please – damn predictive text!
