A third survivor has walked off the government’s grooming gangs panel. Elizabeth (not her real name) Rotherham. Fiona Goddard and Ellie-Ann Reynolds have already gone. They say the process is scripted, toxic, and that the Home Office keeps trying to widen the brief so race and religion slide out of shot. They do not want another police or social-work chair marking the same homework.

Labour announced a national inquiry. Survivors are leaving it. The girls who were failed once by councils, police and a political class that would not say who the gangs were are being failed again if this becomes a general child-abuse seminar with the hard bit deleted. Keep the inquiry on grooming gangs. Appoint a chair the victims can stand. Anything else is why they quit.

Why Fairford? It is not a quiet Gloucestershire field. It is the US bomber strip in this country. B-1s have been flying the Iran war from there. About a dozen still on the pan. The IRGC had already talked about the base and the people on it.

Five men, explosives, vans, a village emptied. If that had gone off it would not have been a local incident. It would have been an attack on the runway the alliance uses to hit Iran, on British soil, next to British houses.

Host the bombers and you host the target. Policing a village at midnight is now part of air defence. The farmer who dialled 999 did more in that hour than another review of “resilience.” The next one may not get a 999. Treat the base as what it is: a front-line airfield with a Cotswold postcode. It is speculation but it seems likely that at least some of these men came by dingy treat the Channel as defended national border not a welcome to criminals.
