The basics of a jet engine are actually far simpler than a reciprocating piston engine, and there’s really only one (or sometimes two) moving parts. But in practice a jet has lots of very precisely made fan blades which spin at considerably higher speeds. With all the external pipework and control systems, a modern jet engine looks mind bogglingly complex compared to the 4 cylinder petrol engine shown. I know which I would rather strip down & rebuild!
7. Whittle … the name on everyone’s mind – the exploded view of a internal combustion engine does look complicated when all of the components that make it work are shown. That’s a complete picture of a 4-cylinder OHV petrol engine. In my apprenticeship years I stripped and rebuilt several because that’s what we working class boys got up to on a weekend. No money = fix it yourself. You learn the difference between a compression ring and an oil ring, a three-bearing crank and four bearing. Stuff like that, rain or shine, you had to get back on the road for Monday to drive work. Happy days 🙂

JH: Hope they come back, Steve, minus kill switches etc.
