3. Hitchens

For any onlookers who may be surprised at this, longstanding Peter Hitchens watchers will know that for the better part of three decades he has almost never actively supported or recommended voting for any party and generally denigrated anyone you think he might have at least some favourable attitude toward, so this comes as no surprise. Raheem Kassam once said something to the effect that you could start the Peter Hitchens Party with a manifesto written entirely out of snippets from his columns and he would still treat it with contemptuous derision.
The only voting recommendations I can recall were for Sunak’s Tories in 2024, on the grounds that Starmer was significantly worse, and to avoid voting Tory in 2010 in the hope that another loss would sweep their fake conservatism aside entirely. Possibly he quietly preferred Theresa May over Corbyn, but I might be misremembering. He had nothing but scorn for UKIP, predominantly it seemed based around Farage being soft on drugs (a subject that barely ever came up and had next to no political relevance, and the one time he was asked Farage said the party’s stance was that they should be tougher on them even though his own leanings were otherwise).
Despite being one of the most consistent anti-EU voices in media (he even made a documentary for the BBC called This Sceptic Isle, which you can watch on YouTube), he also recommended boycotting the 2016 referendum. This matches a curious pattern when it comes to his rhetoric vs when a subject actually becomes politically relevant. He spent years talking about the state’s diminution of marriage, then when gay marriage emerged as new step down that path during the coalition government, he seemed to strenuously make a point of not addressing it. He once appeared on Question Time with transgender activist Paris Lees, was even directly challenged by that individual and declined to address transgenderism at all, despite being the one individual you’d think you could rely on to do so on the biggest platform for it.
Whether it’s his actual agenda or not, it matches double agent behaviour – giving you true and accurate information almost all the time, only to then set you wrong at very precise moments for maximum damaging impact to your cause. He may be a contrarian (I have seen him strenuously reject that label, carrying as it may seem to the implication of an irrational cognitive bias, but as a descriptor it matches his positions); in any case, he operates according to his own logic.
I doubt we’ll get a proper response on his actual issues with Restore, but good luck to Charlie in the attempt – operating at an average of 50 tweets per day, Hitchens is more geared toward quantity than quality on this platform. I get the impression that he is against the use of state power to correct issues that opponents themselves have used state power to create, out of a principle I consider misguided as it can only ever tend towards defeat. That seemed to be his objection when he debated Ann Coulter.
More precisely though, I would guess that his biggest problem with Restore is mass deportations. Yes he’s spoken against mass immigration for decades, but correcting the issue of the people already here sounds too much like ethnic cleansing, and at his core I think Hitchens still has the instinctive boomer recoiling at anything that sounds like the dreaded ‘racism’. Better to let yourself be violently driven to extinction by foreigners (and pay for the privilege!) than send them back to their ethnic kin – doing that would be low status.
His advice for decades at this point has been for young people to abandon the country, though at this point I’m not sure where else there is as the rest of western Europe and the Anglophone countries are all afflicted by the same ideology (anti-white, anti-Christian, anti-Western civilisation – however you want to characterise it, it amounts to the same thing). His big advice is to ethnically cleanse yourself from your own country, but don’t you dare think that you should remove anyone else.
Last I saw, he had also started to become quite soft on Muslims compared to how he used to be; I think he’s swayed by viewing them as social conservatives. Yes they may fill up council houses and claim benefits for endless offspring, but they do it in a classier way than our own dreaded chavs at least (no matter who actually does it more). The hijabs reminds him of how English women would dress in the 1950s, and in a broadcast with turbulent priest Giles Fraser, I remember him calling Muslims brothers and sisters. Perhaps I am way off, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s developing an out-group preference for them compared with the British of the present generation.
For my Restore Britain friends, hopefully this helps to explain the curious figure that is Peter Hitchens. It would be too easy just to write him off as the grumpy Victor Meldrew of the right, railing against everyone else; if he reads this he will likely shudder to see it, but the breadth and depth of his writings has had a huge impact on me in years past. As John Calvin once said of St Augustine (roughly), he is so wholly with me that I could right my entire confession out of his writings. But just like in your teens there’s a Christopher Hitchens phase that you do well to get over quickly, so too for the conservative follows the Peter Hitchens phase – and so too must those of us who care to retain a nation move on from that as well.
