The making (or nicking) of a song

Some of you might recall the song about Enid some days ago. Even for a shorter, more simple song where the words vaguely fit the musical structure, it’s still not that easy to get the meter of the words to match the riffs exactly … in Them’s case it was easier as Van Morrison ad libbed a lot.

All right, so I thought I might do one about myself, being as honest as I can … for example, my epitaph might be: “He just ran out of time.”

So I started looking at strong bassline songs, from Shaking All Over through The Joker (Steve Miller) to this below (to match my character, manner) and in most I looked at, the instrumental version simply did not agree with the hit version. And not just instrumental but with no karaoke nudges anywhere along the way. So we’re relying on youtube offerings, bearing in mind that they can disappear at a moment’s notice.

In short, it’s a hiding to nothing.

Still worth doing? I think so and I’m going to walk you through the process for this song. It’s New Order’s Temptation from the 80s, not my fave decade. Here’s the original:

Now, immediately, we might be running into embedding issues … particularly playback within the States. Hope it will be ok. The good part is that the instrumental version matches it second for second:

However, there are few natural breaks for cues … that’s great for the integrity of the whole but it plays merry havoc knowing where to come in on each verse or chorus … and there are four of these. Thus … who on earth is this song for? Well, for lil ole moi but also for anyone who cares enough to put the words to it, whilst tapping the YT to keep the time displayed.

Disclaimer time … for copyright reasons, no one, not even friends, has the right to copy, let alone distribute in any way … this is the only place you’ll find it and not as a post but as a page … I’ll supply you with the url of the page. I’m almost burying it in other words.

Now, even had you the words beside you (not yet composed by lil ole moi), you’d still need the track, plus these timings of the original below:

  • 1:16 Verse 1 four lines
  • 1:47 Chorus twice
  • 2:03 Ooooooo
  • 2:18 Instrumental
  • 2:24 Verse 2 four lines
  • 2:56 Chorus twice
  • 3:12 Ooooooo
  • 3:44 Instrumental
  • 4:04 (Green eyes) Change of verse structure
  • 4:36 (Bolts from above) Change of chorus structure
  • 5:06 (Oh it’s the last time) Pre-outro
  • 5:37 Instrumental outro (with aaaahs at the start)

The task is to make it unlike what New Order had in mind (coz that was their created experience) and make it more some sort of new personal anthem. Might not work, can never be used anywhere else … sounds a nice task to me.
