11. Back from walkies

Don’t know why I added walkies to the mix but I did … I’ve a short trail up the hill which would do at a pinch, plus a preferred longer trail taking me past a hotel/motel thing which I believe was full of invaders till a year ago. It’s nice by the water there with the squawking birds carrying on some call and dive action, wind was less today.

First return a week ago saw me really doddery, a few days back was much better but still only half to three-quarters of a mile. Today’s was getting on for a mile, inc. there and back. I’d thought the bike riding on gym day was enough but no … the walking does add something and also finds things out. Definitely need to watch hips … no Sloopy dancing for me thanks … sciatica does throw in an occasional reminder but only that.

I’m thinking, chaps and chapesses, that at this age, even stopping training for a week or two means two steps backwards and here’s the thing … we never get it back, unlike for a younger man. We can get some back, not all.

Anyway, along the way was that old pair who are 78 and 73 respectively and today they were at a window which had been pushed open in one of the businesses down there. I greeted them, then realised they were chatting up a bird (unfeathered variety) … must have been a good decade younger, naughty old men. Flirting with younger ladies … appalling!

So, got back upstairs here and had not thought to time it but the last post went up at 1015, I headed out about 1020, this post started about 1033, after drinkies. I’m thinking that that’s not bad going for a geriatric. What to eat? Might finish the oats, blueberries, bananas, yoghurt.

However, this was on Quora:

“Eating. Eating is a good thing to avoid if you are fighting aging and death.

I have read how great blueberries and strawberries are for you. I began to eat them. Till I came across an article saying that blueberries and strawberries are among the “dirtiest” foods out there. By dirty, they mean among the most heavily sprayed with pesticides. Pesticides are cancer threats. I quit eating blueberries and strawberries.

I’d read of how healthy salmon is for you. Salmon reduces cholesterol, fights inflammation, lowers blood pressure. So then I started eating salmon. Till I learned that they contain large amounts of mercury, something that can give you cancer.

I’d read recently of the wonderful benefits of watermelon. So I figured I would go the whole hog on watermelon by buying the Ocean Spray watermelon juice. I began to drink gallons of it. Good, too. Then I learned how heavily watermelon is sprayed with insecticide. Cancer again. So I threw all my watermelon juice away.

Lucky for me, I’d found an article touting the incredible benefits of olives and olive oil, one of the great Mediterranean foods, so I began eating 50 olives a day. I saw immediate results. My digestion began to improve, I felt more energetic than ever. Then I read an article yesterday saying that tests have shown that olives have the strange effect of metastasizing cancer quickly. That electrified me with fear. I was so terrified that I wanted to take an emetic to rid myself of every trace of olives and olive oil.

So here I sit with a fine pre-Thanksgiving pecan pie that my wife was good enough to make today. No fears on THIS food. After all, all the pecans in it fell from my very own trees. And I’m adding a huge shovelful of ice cream, now melting rapidly into the pie’s warm surface. Nothing wrong with ice cream. It’s the All-American treat!

Now don’t ruin it for me by telling me how many calories and how much fat it has or what it will do to my cholesterol. I have found the one food I’ve read nothing carcinogenic about. And anyway, if all the fat and calories and sugar kill me, I’ll die a profoundly happy man. Much better way to go than eating olives or guzzling olive oil.”

I’m thinking that if you are exercising well, you can get away with a bit of rubbish but not a lot. As for washing, I always wash fruit, then any veg used, each larger item one by one. Also cooking up. Sad but we must.

As for bread … well, it’s folic acid poisoned in the main, except for some sourdoughs, spelt, rye. Not so tasty imho. The conchiglie listed nothing but durum wheat … oats 100% oats. Can we trust the bstds though?
