15. I remember attending a DEI session when close to retirement. The chap conducting the sessions tried to persuade us that DEI somehow complemented merit in a way that somehow made it better for the workplace in some way he couldn’t quite define in front of a gathering of scientists. Nobody seemed to believe a word of it, but he did.

14. Me neither – you may say that but they’re indispensable in the military. This was a Merlin Mk.4 used by Commando Helicopter Force out of RNAS Yeovilton – probably a night navigation exercise over Dartmoor that went horribly wrong. The crash site near Sourton is a few miles south-west of Okehampton Battle Camp, a place I know well. Locals say they heard helicopter activity and a loud bang. It went down hard. I’ve been in two forced landings, a Royal Navy Sea King Commando in Norway and an RAF Lynx in Scotland. My thoughts are with the families of the crew just now.
