11. England – as I’ve said before, for the better part of a thousand years we’ve suffered and died for her. In the end we fought not one but two world wars. At the beginning of the latter we stood alone against the greatest war machine the world had ever seen – indeed after Dunkirk Prime Minister Winston Churchill made his famous ‘We shall fight on the beaches” speech. Churchill however was if anything a realist:
‘Allegedly, in the immediate aftermath of his speech, Churchill turned and whispered to a colleague: “And we’ll fight them with the butt ends of broken beer bottles because that’s bloody well all we’ve got!”’
The rest of the world, including the US, thought we were finished. Then came the Battle of Britain, and we all know how that ended. We beat the Luftwaffe; the invasion of these islands never happened; Hitler turned his attention elsewhere, a decision that would eventually lose him the war. What is largely forgotten is the fact that because we were such a highly cohered monocultural society, we were always going to win. That couldn’t be said now. Without a shred of doubt we’d have lost that war with the society we have today.
