DAD’s Cryptic Quiz

Q1. If 4 = 4; 5 = 5 and 6 = 6.  What does 7 equal?    And 8 equal?

Q2.  A cryptic question.    “Small fish Ida swallowed once a week,  (6)”.   You may have to think about that for some time, but the answer will come to you one day.

Q3.  Three Gulfs recently in the news.

Q4.   Who is the current Postmaster General?

Q5.  This is a slightly more difficult cryptic question.   “ Alternative to LSD causes a medical mix-up”, (7).

Answers:

A1.  3 and 7.     As in a 7 segment digital display.

A2    Small fish = fry, ‘swallows ‘ida’ becomes Friday.

A3.   Gulf of Mexico.   Gulf of America.   The Gulf Stream is not collapsing.

A4.   Trick question, we do not have one.    The office was abolished in 1969.

A5.   LSD in this case = £sd.   The anagram of ‘medical’ is ‘decimal’

  1. I got the gulfs. It’s in the news. I guessed Friday but I got none of the others. Even with the answer Q1 makes no sense to me at all.

  2. Answer for No 1. If you looks at a LED digital clock, you will find that each number desplayed is made up of a certain number of elements that are alight (or darkened if it’s a LCD) Look for when ‘4’ is desplayed and count the elements that make the number. You will find the there four. Similarly when the ‘5’ is desplayed there will be five that are alight. It’s the same with ‘6’ in that six elements are alight.
    With ‘7’ we only need three elements, whereas for ‘8’ we need all seven elements must light. In the 1970s when digital desplays were first available I tried to make it display using only AND and NAND gates. I succeeded, but using a display driver was so much easier.
