Wednesday [1 to 5]

(0648) Morning all, finally. 0757 … this one post has take ages …one reason is in Wed 5. (0811)

5. Incoming

Under bombardment here … all sorts of flying creatures coming at my window … what is it … the smell of breakfast?

I have two main rooms, both could be living or bedroom. The second I call my sunroom, as there’s a vista from the 24 panes spread across the outer wall. While it has such views and angles, it also gets wildlife. There is a wasp’s nest ten feet away but on another wall is the place bees strike.

Plus, I think, moths and butterflies … plus birds. So far, no bird attacks on the glass, they dive bonb and then obviously see me, think, “Ugly muvva,” and off they veer. So far. Two wasps got in, one a huge muvva, nasty creature. Dead insects all aling the sill, with Enid happy enough drinking in the brief sunlight.

Enid is my pet Venus Flytrap … looking fairly well just now.

2. DAD at 1414

a)

b) The assailant of the 70-year-old woman in Saint-Charles Cathedral in Saint-Étienne (42) is Alex Covaciu, a 21-year-old Romanian who arrived in France just a week earlier; he was sentenced to two years in prison and banned from entering the country.

c) Another assault.

d) Something lighter. “Potted plants are reactionary”: in Besançon (25), the right-wing geraniums enrage the Green Party activists, who, in a shocking action, attempted to steal the flowers….

JH: All right … I’ve left that up, as DAD is nearing 90, is alone on a large property … is he well prepared? Does he have his artillery ready for this human offal? I’m thinking we’d feel better, were he to have ring defences, booby traps etc.

1. This, by a Steely Dan observer

… is not particularly interesting and certainly vastly inferior to DAD ‘s drop coming up next … but in some way, it forces my choice.

I start at the email inbox, flooded with incoming. One is Quora. Click on url, offers Chrome. Ok, that article is saved over there … for now. Coz some toerag has it on short timer. So, if I go and greet some close people, start clearing the 31 spam … by the time I get there, it’s gone. Ditto with copying the text I want. On timer some toerag put in. I want it copied until I don’t.

These are the cruddy modern IT annoyances put in by IT college graduates. No matter, stout yeomen (and women). So that’s my apology to DAD.

……

“He also told me that he didn’t (ustd what the song was about) but was entranced by the rhythm and mystery of the words. He had willingly travelled the road with an open mind and curiosity, trusting that there would be an opportunity to fill in the blanks.

Steely Dan is the same way: they are poets and world-builders. They write and perform layered and sophisticated music with poetic lyrics. This craftsmanship is why musicians like to say that “Steely Dan is your favorite band’s favorite band.” I was drawn in by some of their more accessible hits like Reelin’ In The Years and Rikki Don’t Lose Than Number, but I eventually consumed the whole catalog, voraciously.

The lyrics also confused the hell out of me. References I did not understand, words I did not know, history that was unknown to me. I scoured lyrics websites and fan forums to learn what lyrics like Drink Kirschwasser from a shell and Technicolor Motorhome might mean. Could I drive on Sunset, to the sea? Is Rudy’s a real place?

If you’d like to do down the rabbit hole, Search for “The Steely Dan Dictionary” which has been growing for 25 years. The Wikipedia articles for each song tend to have a lot of detail as well.

The advice my professor gave me applies: Don’t think too much about art you don’t understand at first. Let it wash over you with an open mind. See if you can feel emotions. You can always study afterwards. A good work of art invites lifelong inspection and study, and can provide many hours of pleasure.”

Once more I’m caught between the twin peaks of art … and meaning. Hell, even I can string words together in a smooth way, so anything I’m about to attack these “artists” over also applies to me.

Worst miscreants with nothing to say included Dylan, Elvis Costello and hundreds more. What they’re selling is musical art with emotion. They can create that libging intensity, mimicking human feelings musically, then they’d best find some lyrics to fit into it.

Were you to let it all wash over you, letting your mood rise and fall over triggers, then you are womanly, unquestioningly. Not me, mate … I understand the artistic imperative but I want real meaning first.

Therein lies the dilemma.

In September 1942, a 229-page report called Europäische Wirtschaftsgemeinschaft was published in Nazi Germany. Its programme was, in structural terms, the Treaty of Rome — the foundation of the European Union — fifteen years early.

c) Thousands March in Rome demanding Mass Re-migration. The demonstration coincided with the launch of Roberto Vannacci’s new political movement, which is seeking to capitalise on growing public concern over immigration.

Palestine Action was formally proscribed by the UK last July. In February the High Court ruled that the government’s ban was “unlawful and disproportionate.” Disputed by the Court of Appeal now…

b) Two men have been found guilty of carrying out a string of arson attacks on a car and properties linked to Sir Keir Starmer.

Ukrainians Roman Lavrynovych, 22, and Romanian Stanislav Carpiuc, 27, acted on the orders of a Russian-speaking Telegram contact called “El Money”, the Old Bailey heard.

6. Digital ID (via Stop Common Purpose)

This part is understandable, being bloggable:

These next two are virtually unbloggable … blogs are in potrait form, not wide vista landscape. Were there some natural divide, we might be able to run it. Thus, it relied heavily on your two finger screen enlarging. Now, if you can’t do this, instead using laptop or PC … not sure how you’ll enlarge it.

a) Should we rejoice at the arrival of Pope Leo XIV in France from September 25 to 28, 2026?  Yes, certainly, for the arrival of a pope is always accompanied by numerous graces for the countries that warmly welcome him. However, this will be a very perilous visit, given its political and social context. (JH: Really?)

b) A workshop manufacturing lethal weapons using 3D printing, intended for sale, was dismantled in Pau, and four men were charged.

c) The questions [that] Dublin won’t ask. A series of high-profile attacks has intensified debate over asylum and border controls, yet Ireland’s governing and media elites remain reluctant to confront the issue directly.

d) [The] “Guardians of Democracy” Greens join effort to block AfD Congress. Political tensions in Germany are escalating ahead of the right-wing opposition Alternative für Deutschland’s (AfD) federal party congress in Erfurt next month….

e) Lies, damn lies and Met Office claims. The Met Office has claimed that a new Welsh temperature record for springtime was set in Cardiff last month….
