(Cough) Yes, not going to admit how much of that I remember, don’t wish to mention my age but the chap mentioning straw palliasses brings back memories … duckboards too. Strict fathers, women dressed as ladies. The only downer to my mind was primitive dental care, plus ills like polio, measles, chicken pox, mumps. Malaria was a big one overseas, plus typhoid, dysentry.

 

The music is Cajun zydeco, the dancing jitterbug, but at about 2:55 on for ten seconds or so, you can see the demonstrating instructors drop into some shimmying, which was yesterday’s topic.

Next Sunday’s jazz post (and it’s a bit of a blockbuster, songs already saved in the vault) is about the whole crossover with Gennet and Vocalion in the 1920 to 30 period, including the race divide and the move from ragtime to boogie woogie and flappers and then onto brass and woodwind. Though next Sunday is primarily piano, it is also a mix of all those genres.

In short, it’s the history of modern music encapsulated in four songs, ranging from 1923 to 1976. I became lost in it last evening. So here’s the first of the zydeco:

The things which struck me about this below were why old men have to look so grumpy much of the time and act in such a curmudgeonly manner? He’s a nice guy looking after his band as you’ll see and yet the two women at the far end seem to be shoved out of the way, while bags of space seem to surround the old man. Hope I never get old, ha ha.

The music? Very danceable, the whole intention … but that’s about it … not a lot of variation.

Back to the shimmying and there were two types … the shoulder shimmying favoured by the westerners as more discreet … and the hip shimmying favoured by the non westerners, inc. the Asians, plus Elvis … better known as belly dancing in the case of the girls.

There are other factors to consider:

• Restorers are intransigent … they will simply NOT vote for Yusuf Farage and the rest of that lot in the gang at the top, who are no way of the right
• Reform are not policy making, they are cherrypicking bits of Restore and leaving out the important parts
• They’re the eternal “commendable second placers” and the reason is they lack integrity at the top … people see that.

a) France has ordered 3,000 substitute teachers into its worst-hit secondary schools, the first substantial concession on classroom conditions since a student revolt began spreading out of the Paris suburbs in late September.

French education minister Édouard Geffray said on TF1 on October 8 that the teachers would go from October 9 to 114 schools classed as red for overcrowding and staff shortages, and to another 400 rated orange. Rectors would also be allowed to recruit several hundred teachers beyond their quotas, he said.

La France Insoumise (LFI) leader Jean-Luc Mélenchon, a candidate in next spring’s presidential election, posted on X that the Place de la Bastille had been retaken and called for a bigger turnout on October 13.

[Nobody has said where the extra teachers will come from.]

b) France. Nantes (44): after being occupied for a few days by far-left students in support of high school rioters, a university building was found in a deplorable state—featuring vandalism, graffiti, bags of excrement, a death threat made with a knife, and more.

c) Germany. Another heavy blow has hit Germany’s traditional industrial sector. According to a report by Blackout News, the renowned porcelain manufacturer Kahla in Thuringia is shutting down its operations for good on December 31, 2026.

Anyone remember that wedding where the bride and party were all in green and they were all walking in one direction? 11. Dutch East India Company

When the Dutch East India Company (VOC) surrendered Formosa (Taiwan) to the Ming loyalist commander Koxinga (Zheng Chenggong) in February 1662 after the Siege of Fort Zeelandia, many Dutch soldiers and officials were permitted to leave for Batavia (Jakarta), but several Dutch women and children were captured, enslaved, or kept behind….

For nearly four decades, the Dutch East India Company had controlled parts of Taiwan, then known to Europeans as Formosa. That ended when the Ming loyalist commander Zheng Chenggong, better known as Koxinga, brought a massive force against the Dutch stronghold of Fort Zeelandia.

After a nine-month siege, the Dutch surrendered.

The agreement allowed the surviving garrison and civilians inside the fort to leave.

But not everyone was there to be rescued.

During the fighting, Dutch families elsewhere had already fallen into Koxinga’s hands. Dutch accounts describe male prisoners being executed and surviving women and children being held captive.

Among them was the family of missionary Antonius Hambroek.

Koxinga sent Hambroek to Fort Zeelandia with an ultimatum: persuade the Dutch to surrender or face death.

Two of Hambroek’s daughters were safely inside the fort.

He could have remained with them.

Instead, he reportedly urged the defenders to continue resisting and returned to captivity, knowing what awaited him.

He was executed.

His wife and children remained prisoners.

One of his teenage daughters was taken as a concubine by Koxinga himself. Other captured Dutch women were distributed among commanders or soldiers as wives and concubines.

Their individual names largely disappear from the story.

Years passed.

In 1684, more than two decades after the Dutch surrender, reports indicated that some of these women were still living in captivity. An effort to arrange their release came to nothing.

Histories of colonial Taiwan usually remember 1662 as the year Koxinga expelled the Dutch.

But military victories look very different when told through the women left behind.

The Dutch sailed away from Formosa.

Some of their women never did.

MUSK.
