16. Splendid isolation

Warren Zevon (died 2003) was an acquired taste … did not set the world on fire and yet there’s a cult feel to his work … the big musos all seemed to like him, Letterman was a fan … I saw this song played on Letterman, using the house band. Good stuff.

You know why I like reaction videos of the old numbers? Why so many females? I like those without egos, with integrity inside, who can feel … there are dozens who are rubbish in my book, male or female. About a dozen all up seem to have something to them. I was thinking … just play the song itself, nostalgically?

Nah … I want that interaction, discovery, surprise from another human. She herself was talking about wanting space to herself, he was singing about still wanting to wake up with someone beside him. Between Warren and her was a nice living pattern. Leaving aside faith for a mo, there are still limits to what we can psychologically handle. I’m known as a hermit but readers know I’m connecting with someone or another all day, everyday. Bored? Lonely? Chance would be a fine thing. Gregarious … and yet an isolate.

That’s what this song is all about.

15. There’s a real edge to all this now

All the western antiWoke, antiGlobo, anticommunist, antiFabian forces are in a resurgence but the Achilles heel of “the right” has always been that their inability to combine … they’re unherdable cats. We’re unherdable cats. But all sorts of people are seeing the extant danger now in the west and are meeting, as above. The establishment did think they had it sussed … attack Farage as long as he stayed on tele and lose badly to him in a GE, thereby retaining control.

But this was new … 10 out of 10 for Restore in GY, just an idea people wanted to back, no slick pollies … and there have been early issues … Saskiagate was one. Restorers are strange people, blunt and noneffusive in many ways, dark sense of humour … and very young, a new breed … Gen X and Gen Zee dominate … most interesting model indeed.

Who’ll win Makerfield? Who knows? Could still be the pretty boy or Burnham … Rebecca is everything a politician isn’t. But Restore is nothing if not ornery, contrary and many really, really like her as she runs the campaign her way, the party trying to promote her. I for one really like her and so many others do too.

Will she win? Who knows? She’ll be more experienced as a branch organiser. Fallings out? Naturally … we’re unherdable. Getting personal … she’s not a classic beauty, not a classic shape … so … bleedin’ … what?

And you know, ditto with the girl in Sat 16 in a few moments. Thus I like her a lot.

Making Plans for Nigel

How can you tell if someone is a heavy drinker but tries to hide it?

Those people who consume large amounts of alcohol and try to conceal it usually succeed in their efforts until one knows how to recognize the signs. One of the most evident symptoms is related to the odor of alcohol that may manifest not only on the person’s breath but also on his or her skin during mornings or after sweat. If somebody consumed too much alcohol overnight, it would be possible to detect its smell even several hours later regardless of brushing of teeth or application of perfume.

The person may also frequently complain about sleeping poorly, problems with their digestion, or suffering from headaches, which are typical results of long-term alcohol abuse but will be explained by other causes.

Behavior-wise, the person is likely to be evasive about the topic of drinking alcohol. They may try to laugh it off, try to change the subject, or even get irritated. One should also pay attention to the fact that the person always finds a reason to drink alcohol – either because of a stressful week, a celebration, or any other personal matter since it makes it easier for them to deny that it is a habit.

In case someone notices these signs in a close friend or relative, it is highly recommended to seek help in online communities and forums where people openly discuss their own experience of dealing with medical problems related to excessive alcohol consumption.

Checked YouTube recommendeds … one of my fave reactors right there … with a CCR song of yore … goodness, how long ago was all that now?

Right at the start of the song, YT rudely cut to ad … a bleedin’ Indian at a desk, eff off … I click out, back in again. Why a reaction, why not just the song? It means a lot to me, seeing how a few generations later, how someone will react, plus she’s easy on the eyes and ears.

Uh huh, Jon Fogerty reprised the theme decades later, picked up by maybe a Russian here and he puts a nice video behind it. Jon Fogerty good as usual, band not bad. Hmmmmm … it’s not CCR, it lacks the CCR touch but at least it’s something in the “Grapevine” style.

Er … wow … two points stuck out. Decades ago, I was in Oz’s Northern Territory, had taken the road at right angles to the main Darwin-Adelaide highway, I was looking for Crocodile Dundee swamp country with crocs or gators … they’d just rescued a guy from a tree after 36 hours, crocs were around the foot of the tree snapping upwards.

Yes, beautiful area near Katherine, birds in flight etc. but the road was a bit iffy … asphalt and yet soft edges. Gave it away and turned the car, heading back to the highway.

Er … right in front of me, a tornado thingy crossing the road, the sound a cacophony … they called it a cyclone in that part of Oz … it wasn’t coming my way, not at all. It was spinning in a circle, a twister, but the whole phenomenon was slowly moving across the road, left to right, was not interested in me.

Well that’s what this footage in the song had captured. And at the end, calm again, night time, typical northern Oz too, though I suppose this one was America. Reflected though … that cyclone had been between me and the highway. I was er … cut off. Just the birds, the crocs and me.

Was exploring 60s films and I feel there are leaner pickings on YT with the 60s. We’re starting to get into varying tastes … horror is becoming more openly so, esp. in the second half of the decade, there seems far more pap, there’s just something creeping in which I’m not that interested in, though others adore it e.g. The Blob. There’s also something twee, which in the 1935 to maybe 1955 period was more stylish, e.g. in dress. I don’t know exactly.

8. The Filioque Clause

Easy for me, in 2026, to be dismissive of the seemingly stupid reason Constantinople fell but do watch the chap’s video I’ve posted twice now. Also, remember it’s pronounced fil ee o kwee.

The eastern church, in the centuries after Jesus died, was resurrected, ascended and so on certainly had Patriarchs but the whole thrust was more spiritual … that is, the idea was for the human head to move to the heart … to come to a relationship with God in a personal way. The closest we can get to that outside orthodoxy is for us, as protestants, to also have a personal relationship … that’s a very eastern concept, very mystical.

The western church though took a different path in Rome and they insisted, the head honchos, that ONLY their interpretation was right and the only human with any authority to say what was what was the Chicago hood there now. Doesn’t matter how rotten the Alexander Borgia is at the time … a politburo elected or parachuted human, even a raving communist, somehow was spiritually divine. Think you know what I think of that.

And not just me either but the eastern patriarchs too. And that sun god thing surrounding the cross, and the worshipping of Mary … yes yes, I know they say “venerating”.

So, the only reason I mention it is that west and east had quite different Christianity. They’d agreed on the Trinity all right, no issue there, plus a basic hierarchical order of Father first, obviously, then Son, and then the HS, who or which resides within the human who “buys the ticket”.

But now the events of 1054 took place (there’s a later split in 1378, plus Constantinople fell on May 29th, 1453). In the 1054, the western pope added that the HS proceeded from both the Father and the Son … it was just a correction in western minds, a minor matter.

Not so to the east … to them, it was the most egregious heresy. To the east, the spirit proceeded from the Father, via Son and into the human heart.

So the entire Christian church split up, in The Great Schism. Of course it was not only over that wording … it was the cavalier Bishop of Rome who was the issue. To the east, the bishop of Rome was certainly a Patriarch, but just one of many …

… and when Mehmet the infidel broke through and took Constantinople on this day back then, he immediately went to one of the Patriarchs and appointed him as such. He did not snuff out Christianity in Constantinople … not yet … despite turning the Hagia Sofia into a mosque.

Now, the only “Christianity” remaining was that of the Bishop of Rome, with Mehmet controlling the east. Some might say that satan finally had his victory until the protestant rebellions.

So today is certainly an auspicious day concerning a faith which began in AD 33 or thereabouts and which had gone through horrendous vicissitudes over the journey.

You use stan every day yourself, since Proto-Indo-European is also the root of all Germanic languages (including English), all Italic languages (including Latin and its descendants Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese,), and all Slavic and all Baltic and Hellenic and Celtic languages.

The original Proto-Indo-European is *steh₂-(“to stand”). The meaning remains similar in many descendant languages:

I tend to see NOWP drops as requiring signposting here but also, increasingly, youtubes and rumbles seem to go there … that seems fine to me. What of comments at HQ though? 1. Op ed of sorts

The brief of this site has been to bring as many perspectives as possible through our contributors, inc. me. The overriding issue is that we can lead a horse to water but if he turns away from the water, not a lot can be done. We did our part. Reform’s own polling shows that Restore are their main problem, not Burnham.
