7. Russia and the Ukraine – a conflict that could have ended four years ago. I took the view early on that Russia would win this, eventually. Militarily they were weak going in to this and much of their equipment was antiquated. They learn fast, changed the way they fought and what they fought with to secure victory. The Russians fought the definition of a limited war, and said so. Ukraine however declared the war a battle for the whole of Europe. Russia has neither the means or the inclination to ‘invade Europe’. Russia will consolidate the four oblasts and together with Crimea a new border will be formed that constitutes the Russian Federation. The proxy lost because they fought the wrong war.
