16. Isilme and venison

“We had venison steaks and chunky roasted vegetables and a tiny pumpkin between us. The venison is not something we normally have, but it was in the reduced section of the supermarket and we couldn’t resist.
We had a whole deer once (not in one sitting, I hasten to add) because we came across one dying in the road and phoned the police. They came out with a chappie with a shotgun and put it out of its misery – and they then asked us where we would like them to put it (!!!?!) so we suggested our driveway.
My Beloved, not being a butcher, cut it up with a chainsaw (I kid you not). It took ages to wash all the little hairs off the resulting weird cuts of meat. I ended up stewing quite a lot of it because I wasn’t quite sure how else to serve it up!
Oh, the stories I could tell about roadkill or whatever. Maybe another time. We seem to have been very busy lately with barely any time to do laundry, ironing, housework, etc.”
16. A friend of mine used to drive one of those big Royal Mail trucks at night. One night he hit a deer up near Aylesbury, the poor thing was dead when he stopped to inspect. Knowing that you can pick up roadkill if it wasn’t you who killed it he left it where it was. On the way back he pulled over, heaved it into a couple of large mail sacks and took it home. He butchered it in his bath to catch any blood. The amount of blood surprised him, took ages and gallons of water to flush it away. I didn’t get any of the meat as he had three freezers from his cod fishing days.
