Last night I watched a recording I made of a three-part series called Platoon 24/7. This was back in February and I’ve only just got round to watching it:
During 2025, a film production company was embedded with 13 Platoon, D Company, 5 RIFLES, filming a documentary called ‘Platoon 24/7: Preparing for War’ (‘24/7’ is a C5 ‘brand’ they use on a few access series). The documentary highlights the personal journeys of some of the key Riflemen within the platoon | https://www.therifleslikoyli.co.uk/post/platoon-24-7-preparing-for-war-a-new-channel-5-series-featuring-d-coy-5-rifles
You always compare your time in the forces to what it is like today – well I do anyway. What I saw was less discipline certainly and every other bloke has a full set now. We know why they made this change to King’s Orders and I commented on it at the time. In my day the lads were a muscular lean, and very fit but some would say that’s because you were in Commando Forces where standards are different.
True, but when I was at Woolwich Garrison there were no ‘fatties’ as I recall. Blokes didn’t wear glasses either so something must have changed with the eyesight test to allow it.
Having said that the soldiers are the same, it’s just the age we live in that makes them seem somewhat different to my generation – I’m sure my Dad’s generation would look upon mine and come to the same conclusion. What I’m describing is a societal change and the Army it do recruit from it. On to the AFV they dismount from to do their fighting and it’s the FV 510 Warrior.
A little secret: the company I did my apprenticeship with made the gearboxes, a subcontract from David Brown. I know because my Dad worked there at the time. Next year marks its 40th anniversary in service with the British Army.

Could this be the one to replace the worst rifle ever issued to British squaddies..?

Yeah, lot of balls being juggled. I like it but stuck as it is on 5.56mm this platform may not make the cut. As per your video the 6.8mm intermediate round is gaining traction. There’s also the 6.5mm Grendel, which I’ve fired from a bolt-action rifle. The current NATO standard is beginning to fail against the latest body armour, or enemy forces out of their minds on drugs.
