  1. I used to mock American chatter about free speech because their only speech protection was from government. Otherwise Americans were in my experience noticeably conformist and rather horrified at the custom of much freer speech enjoyed by, for instance, Britons or Aussies.

    But we and our little Antipodean cousins have given up this noble habit and now the American love of legalism looks better than it used to. They can still be sacked and persecuted for free speech but not, at least not in principle, by the federal government. Given that, mind you, I do wonder why arms of state governments – e.g. state universities – can get off with suppressing free speech.
