“If Eva turns up in the middle of the Channel on a dinghy, they’ll have to.let her in. They can’t immediately deport her as that would set a precedent, and also show if they can deport her, there’s no reason why they can’t immediately deport the thousands of small boat doctors and engineers arriving weekly by the same method. Just a thought.”

Only issue with that I can see is that the RNLI will need to land her, otherwise she’s illegal … and white European.

Found this on samizdata. Bang on point.

Sir John Cowperthwaite ran Hong Kong’s finances from 1961 to 1971 and treated regulation like a tax on discovery. Nobody in government can know which business will work, so he refused to pick, plan, or protect.

Whitehall sent officials to Hong Kong to push for economic statistics, and he sent them home. When Milton Friedman asked in 1963 why he collected so little data, Cowperthwaite answered: “If I let them compute those statistics, they’ll want to use them for planning.” Numbers give planners a reason to act, and every plan arrives as a rule that tells entrepreneurs what they may not try. Asked what poor countries should do to grow, he said they should abolish the office of national statistics.

Good news, my 2002 Twingo, which I use for shopping, passed its MOT, just one comment, to replace a wheel bearing in the next few months.

a) With an approval rating of just 13%, Emmanuel Macron has surpassed the record for unpopularity set by his socialist predecessor at the Élysée, François Hollande, according to the latest edition of the Elabe institute’s barometer, published on Thursday, November 5, 2026.

b) France prepared to block Snapchat, TikTok, and Instagram during protests. The kill switch never flipped, but the government had already drafted the scene.

c) A political realignment appears to be underway in France ahead of the impending presidential election, with polling suggesting that a significant cohort of young voters are moving towards National Rally candidate Marine Le Pen. Though long held up as a bogeyman for left-leaning French youth, the National Rally appears to be attracting a historic level of support from 18- to 24-year-old voters.

d) Belgium’s media censorship of right-wing voices: a model for French left, French left-wing politicians are calling for Belgium-style media censorship of far-right opponents following a racist attack in Trappes and a petition against CNews that gathered over 700,000 signatures.

e) EU Lawmakers move to weaken Car Emission Standards. European Parliament lawmakers voted to weaken EU carbon dioxide emissions targets for new vehicles, backing an 87.5% reduction by 2035 instead of the planned 100% ban on petrol and diesel car sales.
