  1. The Rover V8 aluminium engine was a lovely thing. The American company that introduced it (Buick) didn’t make a success of it so Rover bought the rights and re-engineered it.

  2. We kids from the housing estate used to hitch rides up the M1, just to get the occasional ride in a posh motor like that one. None of the families in those days had cars.

  3. I used to drive a P90, with the freewheel screw on the tunnel. When I was restoring the Pilgrim, I was sorely tempted by the 4500 Rover block … it was easy enough to change over from the Cortina 2000, with set engineering at the works in Small Dole. Not all that expensive either on my salary at the time. On the other hand, the Cortina was reliable, had enough power for a body weight of 670 kg.

  4. The Land Rover 101 FC had the 3.5 litre V8 engine. Stripped down with the doors off, no top and with an aluminium chassis it could touch 90mph. Not bad for gun tractor 🙂
