Starmer is live on TV speaking at the NATO meeting in The Hague. Interest I have none. He did however announce yesterday the purchase of 12 F-35A aircraft for the RAF, which does interest me. These are cheaper than the B variant that is currently in service with the RAF and the Fleet Air Arm. They are also easier to maintain. Other gains with this CTOL (conventional take-off and landing) version are heavier payload, greater range and a higher g limit of 9. The STOVL (short take-off, vertical landing) version has a g limit of 7.5. The F-35A is the only variant to have an internal cannon: 25mm GAU-22/A. The purchase is for NATO to have a tactical strike capability with the B61 Mod 12 nuclear bomb. The Royal Navy were lumped with the F-35B when the carriers they were designed for were fitted with a ski jump flight deck. The F-35C is the carrier version and the version we should have had.
