Louis Hayward made a fine Saint and as one of the reviews says, he could have made a success of the role in the later TV series. Perhaps his age might have been too obvious by then, but this one is a good Saint-type story with a twist at the end.
……
JH: Surprised me, AKH … shall run another episode. Oh dear, just found this:
“Hayward was cast as the first screen incarnation of Simon Templar in Leslie Charteris’ The Saint in New York (1938) at RKO. The film was a hit and would eventually lead to a long-running series. However, the next five films in the series starred George Sanders as Templar. Hayward would eventually reprise the role in The Saint’s Return in 1953.”
However, I did find the latter … earlyish afternoon.
Interesting, I haven’t seen his versions, but can’t see George Sanders making a great success of it. Too coldly ruthless for Simon Templar, but I’d watch one to find out.
