You could argue that giving ordnance to the AFU is akin to throwing it away. Now they are throwing their aircraft into the sea. |

  1. USS Harry S. Truman lost another F/A-18 Super Hornet yesterday. Yep, arresting gear failed (tail hook) on landing and over she went. Crew ejected safely but their aircraft is now at the bottom of the Red Sea. This is the third aircraft of this type to be lost on this deployment and none to enemy action. A further two Martin-Baker neck ties are in the post 🙂

    JH: WTH is going on?

    • Sorry I’m so late getting back to your question, James. As far as I know there are two US Carrier Strike Groups in the Middle East, one in the Red Sea (USS Harry S. Truman) the other in the Eastern Mediterranean (USS Carl Vinson). The latter has the F-35C. With regard to F/A-18 losses we should cut them some slack as they are in a zone of conflict and with an upward tempo things do go wrong. A huge ship like a carrier, executing hard-a-port to avoid an incoming missile? Well if it’s loose it’ll roll. The second where there was a problem with the arresting hook could be a simple malfunction due to extended use – it was a night landing but I don’t know it that had any bearing. The Yanks had been bombing the shit out of the Houthis for six straight days and nights. Here’s some vid:
