Ken Burn’s documentary series The Vietnam War (2017) is an education. It’s 10 episodes and about 18 hours in total. I’ve watched it three times. For those who remember it yesterday was the anniversary of the Fall of Saigon and the end of the war. The War Room: Remembering Vietnam 50 Years Later.

Yes I know his politics but that doesn’t detract from the either the history or reasoning behind the war. Over the years I’ve read many books about the Vietnam War, Robert Mason’s Chickenhawk is a favourite, and other documentaries such as Vietnam: Ten Thousand Day War (1980). On a personal note early in my military career I met several US Vietnam veterans, still serving who opened up about their experiences – to explain certain aspects of mountain gunnery when you can’t see the hills for the jungle. This led to rounds landing short (cresting) and being ineffective at best, or killing friendlies at worst. After a few beers the retelling got into the more personal stuff which was rather involved. Soldiers talking to soldiers.
