    Elon’s Two Positions On Immigration

    The Two Elons
Near the end of my last post (“Christmas Conflict As Cracks Appear In The MAGA-Tech Alliance”), I mentioned that Elon Musk had walked back his call for mass, legal immigration.

I based that on this post of his, where he said he was only talking about the top 0.1% of engineers in the world (perhaps 10,000 individuals per year).

Maybe this is a helpful clarification: I am referring to bringing in via legal immigration the top ~0.1% of engineering talent as being essential for America to keep winning.

This is like bringing in the Jokic’s or Wemby’s of the world to help your whole team (which is mostly… https://t.co/mtd0cgkNvE

On Friday, Elon walked back his walk back with this post.

This is the right position for those who want America to win.

For those who want America to lose for their own personal gain, I have no respect. Zero. https://t.co/2WxAjZzDfW

The Top 0.1% Or The Top 100%?
There are ways to quantify the top 0.1% of engineers–you can go by their educational and professional background (assuming they’re not from a corrupt country such as India, where these credentials can be gained by bribery). But there is simply no objective way to determine if a prospective immigrant is “honest, hardworking, and loves America”.

They will all tell you they are, in order to get here, so if those are your criteria, you are effectively saying you will accept 100% of prospective immigrants.

You and Elon keep toggling between wanting the top 0.1% (which few object to) and this, which—given that there’s no way to objectively measure these characteristics ahead of time—is effectively the top 100. pic.twitter.com/jkgDaMyxm9

    — David Pinsen (@dpinsen) December 27, 2024
This is a crucial distinction. It’s even more crucial, given America’s fiscal situation.

Also, since you are (rightly) concerned about America going bankrupt, shouldn’t you want to at least screen for prospective immigrants who are likely to be net fiscal contributors?

One can be honest, hardworking, & love America, and be a fiscal drain.https://t.co/8g4Df13EUK

Does Elon Really Want To Side With Neera Tanden On This?
Predictably, Indian American Democratic operative Neera Tanden pulled the race card, but less predictably, Elon seemed to side with her.

    Yes.

And those contemptible fools must be removed from the Republican Party, root and stem.

    — Elon Musk (@elonmusk) December 27, 2024
There are two reasons why Elon might want to rethink this approach. The first is that the experiment of mass immigration from India has been tried, in both Canada and Britain, and the results have not been good.

“So China is going to beat us by importing Indian tech talent?”

“Uhh no sir they don’t import any Indians.”

“No Indians. Ok. But the UK and Canada – they bring in Indians by the boatloads. Their tech sectors must be booming.”

    “Well sir… uh… no not exactly.” pic.twitter.com/eHxPoq1DRX

    — Rock Farmer (@RockFarmer5) December 27, 2024
Canada’s Indian-born population has skyrocketed, and it has little to show for it economically.

There’s also the example of Canada over the last few years, which opened the floodgates from India and got lousy economic growth in return. pic.twitter.com/kuqAseUcsb

    — David Pinsen (@dpinsen) December 25, 2024
This is unsurprising when you consider that India has more Indians than anyone and has a per capita GDP of less than $3,000 per year.

The second reason Elon ought to reconsider this is that the same people who want mass immigration from India and the rest of the third world also want to tax unrealized capital gains and otherwise enact policies that will keep him from ever getting to Mars.

If tech right takes its ball and go home, they can be with AOC and the Hamas Caucus, taxes on unrealized gains, and a room of people who love Luigi.

The real right isn’t negotiating from a position of weakness.

    Hope people understand that.

    Two Signals Elon Should Note
The incoming Trump admin has mostly stayed out of this conflict, but Vice President-Elect Vance did repost this on Friday.

    .@JDVance said it best:

“One of the things you hear people say sometimes is that America is an idea. America is not just an idea. It is a group of people with a shared history and a common future. It is, in short, a nation.” pic.twitter.com/b8Nxwpf4N5

    — Steve Cortes (@CortesSteve) December 27, 2024
Perhaps Elon will get that hint. If not, the other signal he should note is Tesla’s share price. It was down almost 5% on Friday, the worst performer of the Magnificent Seven stocks.

Tesla shares have skyrocketed since the election, as investors realized that with Elon’s new best friend in the White House, the regulatory obstacles and lawfare against Tesla would stop.

With Elon endorsing takes by Indian American Democratic operatives, maybe investors are starting to rethink that thesis.

Tesla Drops Out Of Our System’s Top Ten Names
One of the components of Portfolio Armor’s automated security selection system is options market sentiment. After being in our system’s top ten names earlier this week, Tesla didn’t appear in Thursday night’s top ten.

Perhaps that’s another signal, as options traders started to fade Tesla before stock investors

If so, I am thankful to be away from fusa.

And so many will cheer their maga saviors for it.

    repent,
