When i were a lad I’d bike miles just to see and hear a Deltic emerging from the Hadley Wood tunnel. A majestic experience lasting only a few seconds. The roar would be heard as the loco entered the tunnel, about 400 yards away. The sound would gradually get louder and angrier until it burst out with a bone shaking explosion. Okay, I maybe exaggerating a bit.
Steam was almost gone by the time I caught the bug. Our gang occasionally encountered decommissioned steam locos in sheds we visited. Stratford, Old Oak Common and one of the Birmingham ones, maybe Saltley, always had a few waiting to be towed to Barry Island for scrapping.. Needless to say that anything not nailed down was nicked.

I used to collect train numbers at New Barnet Station, but before the Deltic was used on the old LNER line.
