- A wave of attacks is expected, targeting thousands of objectives, including military and political sites, as well as targeted eliminations. The U.S. has already concentrated about a third of its active naval forces in the Middle East. This includes hundreds of fighter jets, two aircraft carriers, and more than 150 cargo flights carrying weapons. In just one day, around 50 F-35, F-22, and F-16 fighter jets were deployed to the region. There are also about 33 ships in the area, including aircraft carriers, destroyers, and submarines with Tomahawk missiles.

7. Katie on Donny on Two Tier – folk in the States are wondering why so many A10 Thunderbolts have been deployed overseas – back to that in a mo. Our esteemed PM has blocked the use of RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire, and the airfield on Diego Garcia, both of which could be used for strikes on Iran by the US – good old Sir Keir, you can rely on him to protect all those lovely Ayatollahs who are currently murdering their own people just to stay in power.
No matter, if there is a strike it won’t be anything like the ‘Shock and Awe’ in Iraq. I’ve been reading up on the possible ways to bring down the Shia Islamic regime in record time – the favourite is a new type of warfare that is highly precise: multiple decapitations across a thousand miles all at the same time. They will react of course and attack one or both of the US Carrier Battle Groups. One method is to swarm a carrier with 50 to 75 explosive-filled fast boats, suicide manned or drone, in order to take it out. That’s where I think the Warthogs come in.
The A10 is renowned as one of the best close air support (CAS) aircraft ever built – that’s why it’s still in use 53 years after it first flew. It was purposely designed to support troops on the ground, a design that wrapped itself around the awesome 30mm GAU-8 rotary autocannon – I’ve seen it firing myself on a range in Northumbria and the sound it makes you don’t forget. The A10 is rugged, its airframe can take a lot of punishment and that is something it shares with naval aircraft. Carrier operations are brutal on airframes.
This what I think. There are A10’s aboard these aircraft carriers and they are there to take out those swarms of IRGC boats coming at them. The A10 is short take-off and landing (STOL) and with no bombs or missiles loaded there is enough deck to take off without the assistance of a catapult, and land without the use of a hook and arresting wire. Training is still required but I think there’ll be US Marine Corps AV-8B pilots somewhere in the mix. I could be wrong of course 🙂
