I can’t remember anyone make a fuss of St Andrew’s Day except the Scottish Country Dancing fraternity. Good for them: who can fail to enjoy a Dashing White Sergeant, a whirling Eightsome Reel, or a dignified Strathspey?
They used to broadcast this stuff on the old Scottish Home Service. For a long time it was easily the best music on the wireless apart from stuff on the Third Programme – pop music when I was young was utterly dreadful. Thank God for the trad revival and then the Beatles.
