One of the YT comments for no.1 says –
“This must be one of Hawkins’ wrestling matches with the bass saxophone. Rex Steward wrote that Bean was fascinated by Rollini and wanted to give it a try.”
Anyway, a very pleasant foot tappin’ interlude over mince pie and coffee which unfortunately is all gone now.
3: I loved the Alex Hill thing – it’s just as good as it was when you gave it to us before. (Or is my memory playing me false?)
2: King Oliver was better than OK – he never did repeat the success of his first band which seems harsh but that’s the nature of musical fashion.
1: I am obliged for AKH’s news that it was Coleman Hawkins butchering the bass sax. It certainly puts Adrian Rollini’s musicianship in a favourable light. I’ve heard other people of the era try it, but none as badly as “Bean”.
