  1. 12. Lincolnshire has some of the richest and most productive soil in the land. I can only suspect that the plan is to destroy that productivity.

    ……

    JH: Yes.

  2. 13. Surprised they found the time – the smithing on that broach is not unique to the men of the creek (OE wīċing). The Englisc finally saw off these pirates on 25 September 1066 at the Battle of Stamford Bridge (OE Gefeoht æt Stanfordbrycge). Our beloved King, Harold Godwinson, and his army beat the crap out of the drugged-up nutters and killed their leader, King Harald Hardrada. Hollywood may glamourize the Viking but in reality they were thieves and murderers, and unlike the Saxon were incapable of nation building.

    • There were comments by historians, and my history teacher, that the Normans were of Viking stock, having raided, and then settled in, northern France, and it was only the infighting between the Danes and the Norse which prevented a larger Scandinavian force. The fact that Harold then had to quickly march his men south, leaving them exhausted, led to the result of the Battle of Hastings, or so I was told.

      • You were taught well Penseivat. After the battle Harold’s army marched all the way from the East Riding of Yorkshire to the south coast in roughly 72 hours. They were indeed exhausted and the rest as they say is history. The Normans (north men) were originally from Scandinavia however what William Duke of Normandy did to the conquered Englisc horrified the peoples of Europe at that time. He was widely hated and his descendants really set us up for the near constant waring that followed. England was much admired before the invasion, but boy was it shunned afterwards.
