I remember two motorcycle shops in Derby, one had a display of British bikes each with an oil drip tray on the floor under the crankcase and the other had a display of Hondas with no drip tray.
I paid a visit to the Scarborough Fair collection recently, and was discussing some of their old British bikes with another chap of a similar age. Noticing the floor was clean underneath a Royal Enfield, I quipped “They must have drained the oil out before putting it on display – we used to call them Royal Oilfields” He smiled…
They built crap motorbikes. When Hondas appeared they were infinitely better.

JH: ☺️
DM and AKH: Sadly so. I wanted to love those black bikes.
We had the Triumph Trident and the BSA Rocket III and they (Nippon) had the Honda CB 750 and the Kawasaki Z1 900. Looks and reliability won the day.
