Twinned with … where?

There’s just something about his deadpan manner, and his focus on near irrelevant but still interesting minutiae which I find relaxing:

  1. Beware Town Twinning with an EU town. The EU rules will promote the EU.

    Town-Twinning:

    This year’s specific focus is on:

    The richness of the cultural and linguistic environment in Europe;
    Reinforcing the European integration process through solidarity;
    Debating the future of Europe ;
    Reflecting on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the local communities.

    Networks of Towns:

    Specific focus could be given to:

    Strengthening the European and democratic dimension of the EU decision-making process;
    Supporting free and fair elections in Europe, in particular in view of the European elections…
    Promoting the debate on the future of Europe;

  2. The village my Dad lived in had a twinned French town and every couple of years they would have a cultural exchange, organised by the “French Club” (I forget what its actually called), a loose collection of people in the village and surrounds. Some years French inhabitants would come here, other years the English would go there. The groups comprised between 10 and 20 individuals, and they would stay singly or in pairs with a host family for a week. Activities in the local area were organised and a good time had by all. No bureaucrats involved.

    One of my wife’s favourite “Dad stories” is of the time on one of these trips he wandered into the tourist info centre and introduced himself – (in french)”Hello, I’m Ken S******* from [english village]” and then sat and watched them running about trying to work out what to do about the crazy old Englishman.
