The Ov-10 Bronco

That’s interesting, why did you choose that particular aircraft James? The reason I ask is I’ve flown in a Bronco when I spent a week with the Air Naval Gunfire Liaison Company (ANGLICO) back in the day. My unit did the same job within 3 Commando Brigade, however we also worked alongside our allies, especially the Americans. The US Marine Corps have so much kit compared to us it’s embarrassing. They recognised our professionalism though and we often had the edge because we made do with what we had to the nth degree.
……
JH: Just had a hunch you might be somehow familiar with it, maybe even the Warthog.
The A-10 Thunderbolt (Warthog) I’m familiar with inasmuch as being on the ground when it opens up in front of you and shreds everything in its path. Close air support (CAS) doesn’t get much better when the troops you’re supporting are in a jam and the terrain around them rules out other weapon systems. The Apache may have the M230 chain gun (see Prince Harry’s book ‘Spare’) but the GAU-8 Avenger autocannon the Hog was built around is the ultimate “beast of the battlefield”. Soldiers love it. We haven’t had a dedicated ground support aircraft since the Hawker Tempest in WW2 – as an aside the father of television presenter Kate Humble was test pilot for both the Tempest and the Typhoon.
