    A transformer is just an iron core surrounded by 2 or more copper or aluminium windings. You can’t switch them on or off. That, in grid scale applications, is done by separate circuit breakers. In any case, a “hardware” backdoor implies an extra bit of equipment which will be easier to spot. Much more widespread (and difficult to detect) are software backdoors embedded in the control systems.
