2. Ladies first … Isilme

Isilme had been describing the unsuccessful venture into going to the local chippy when she makes better herself imho, then ……

“Meanwhile, down in the garden, the strawberries are a little confused. As I’ve mentioned before, they have been fruiting like crazy this year. A few days ago I noticed some ripe strawberries. Only four, but some years that’s all we had for the whole year. And now the plants are flowering again.

The apples are still hanging around in spite of the strong winds the other night. The trees are still heavily laden even though we’ve collected several bags full for various people. The Bramley hangs over the garden wall and there’s almost as many apples on the other side as there are on the garden side.

We tell people to help themselves, but not many do (except around harvest festival time, so I expect a few will be gathered soon). The Pippin is similarly laden and we’ve eaten a few of those but they probably need to ripen a little longer.. I think I will try to keep a few in crates to last us over the winter. That is, if I can stop Beloved from making them into cider.

I neglected the runner beans and think I will now have to collect and dry the beans themselves as they are past their best . . . but they’re still flowering hopefully. The chilli peppers are ready to harvest but I can’t even find the sweet pepper plants. Not sure what happened to them! I really ought to gather the rest of the courgettes too. I’ve had so many I’ve left a few on the plant so that they ‘keep’ a bit longer. But I see there are more tiny courgettes on the way.. They probably won’t get very far though.

The tomatoes went crazy too, except that they’re all still green. We got a small bowl full of cherry tomatoes and a couple of large tomatoes, but the rest are just sitting there looking green. I think I may have to bring them in soon and see if they ripen.”

1. Ladies first … Toodles

JH: this is more difficult to know how to present … was going to mention the procedure and no name but shall do the name and no details. Not only for Toodles but for all of you having some sort of cross to bear there, soldiering on … this is where the efficacy of prayer kicks in from many people … it does work but I would say that, would I not? And why not?

To all of you there … things do eventually come to us … even those in the middle … well enough of that. Prayers please for Toodles and all of you.

  1. Regarding Isilme, my chillis never got going under the perma clouds, tomatoes very slow to get going but very few ripened when they did fruit. I brought the green ones indoors on Tuesday, put them in a box with a banana to ripen, they have all started rotting! For one reason or another this year has been an unmitigated disaster. I will plug on regardless. Being out in the garden watching the skies and the lack of pollinators can be quite revealing.

    …..

JH: Lack of pollinators … yes.
