(1517) Late afternoon and evening all.
16. There’s something about the 30s in film
Have aleady mentioned the lighter vein, the lightheartedness but that’s the type of film I’ve skimmed through for the site, filled with women of a non-feminist type, nice fashions … the films themselves, during the depression were heavy on happy endings.
One I was looking at for today was The Mystery Man, ended up posting it … uninspiring review below it but halfway through, a real “keeper” suddenly appeared and altered his arrogance just like that. The audience must have been urging these two on to the last gasp happy ending.
Started thinking why these films are nice … could the stagey nature, out of the silent era, be a factor? The woodiness of the acting? The almost amateurishness? Thought back to The 39 Steps and though far more serious, the values were still nice. 20s for jazz, 30s for film?

11. Just one of the myriad issues facing us

« IRGC General Abdollahi has issued a statement from Central Headquarters declaring Iran is “continuing the path to complete victory.” Day 25 of the war. The Supreme Leader is dead. The SNSC Secretary was killed and replaced today by a hardliner. Dozens of senior commanders are gone. 330 of 470 ballistic missile launchers are destroyed. Fire rate has collapsed from 90 per day to 10. South Pars is offline. Gas exports to Turkey and Iraq have halted. The 504-hour internet blackout continues. Rolling power cuts of 4 to 8 hours hit every major city. And the IRGC’s official communication to its population is: complete victory…… »

« : The Philippines has declared a one-year national energy emergency. President Marcos signed Executive Order 110 today activating the UPLIFT Committee to enforce anti-hoarding measures, mandatory energy conservation, and emergency support for transport, agriculture, and small businesses. A one-year emergency. Not 30 days. Not 90 days. Three hundred and sixty-five days of crisis planning for an archipelago that imports 95 percent of its crude oil from the Middle East…. »

Iran is the toll keeper atm. Pardon the pun but they’ve got us over a barrel.
More « The Philippines is the seventh country to implement crisis measures since the war began. Sri Lanka rationed first: Wednesdays off, QR codes, LPG almost vanished. Bangladesh imposed public holidays. Pakistan restricted fuel. India tightened allocations. Slovenia became the first EU country with odd-even plates. South Korea barred government vehicles one day per week. Now the Philippines has declared a full-year emergency. The list is climbing the GDP ladder and spreading across continents. The common denominator is not geography. It is import dependency. Every country on this list sources the majority of its energy from a region whose primary export route passes through 21 miles of water that one organisation now controls.… »
14. Battery bollox again – lets look at energy density by weight shall we..
Lithium-ion batteries = 150 to 300 Watt hours per kilogram
Petrol = 12,000 Watt hours per kilogram
EV’s are about 30% heavier than equivalent ICE vehicles, which means they go through tyres and brake parts twice as fast. They are also harder on road surfaces. If you get hit by one not only will your car suffer more damage in many cases the EV that hit you will be written off, because the tiniest damage to its battery can result in thermal runaway.
This morning I had a lift to the bowls club with an ex copper, very good driver. He was weaving all over the road to avoid potholes, I commented that it was the fault of EVs He mentioned the rain, I didn’t pursue it. I would have said but refrained, that as the potholes are worse then ever before it suggests that something has changed, either the quality of road surface or the vehicles on it.
