My first full time job in 1972 was as a clerk in a large printing firm. Our office, like a conning tower rose above the machine floor, we could see the telephonist in a side office quite clearly. She operated one of those old fashioned switchboards with plugs on leads. Occasionally we would all ask for an outside line, dial back in and ask to speak to one another. Great fun we had, until one day she sniffed out what we were up to. This formidable lady immediately abandoned her post, marched up to the office and gave us an ear bashing never to be forgotten.
