Our esteemed Prime Minister is at the dispatch box telling us his version of what is happening in the Middle East. Nothing we don’t already know, apart from the destroyer leaving Portsmouth to take up station in the sea around Cyprus will be HMS Dragon and not Duncan. Won’t be there till next week though. I was listening to a recently retired Royal Navy captain on Talk Radio who talked about the state of our preparedness. Not good.
Ideally we should be able to put one of our carriers down there to guard the Strait of Hormuz and with its air wing it could help contain the threat from Iranian missiles that are currently hitting the Gulf States. Problem is neither of the two are available – and we ain’t got enough F-35B’s that are ready in all respects anyway. Back in the day we would have had a dozen frigates and destroyers and at least one carrier loitering the Med.
If that isn’t bad enough imagine our preparedness if the greens get in.
Indeed, and we now learn that HMS Dragon is now two weeks away from taking up station. Type 45’s are high tech, high maintenance warships and we only have six so there are overlaps in the schedules for each of them. Incredibly all of them are undergoing maintenance at the same time. The original requirement was for twelve Daring-class guided-missile destroyers but that number was reduced to eight then six. SNAFU.
