Monday [7]

(0821) Morning all … awful out there. Short hiatus after this, maybe even until elevenses but let’s see. (0827)

Of swedes, apples and Isilme

On Wednesday I went to the pop up pantry and got a very large swede! I took a photo of it next to a grapefruit so you can get the scale of it. It’s almost the size of my head. I’m not sure how on earth I’m going to cut it up to cook it. Perhaps my Beloved will have to take the chainsaw to it…

Our next door neighbour (in her nineties) and her daughter (in her sixties) asked if they could have some of our apples a week or two back and I said yes, go and help yourselves. They very kindly picked all our apples.

Actually, that’s not true, they picked all the eating apples and about a quarter of the Bramleys. Two crates of Bramleys and one of eating apples (pippins). The ladies said they thoroughly enjoyed their afternoon of apple picking, and they kindly cleared up the garden a bit in the process! There are still Bramleys left on the tree. Probably another two or three crates worth – I kid you not.

Today Beloved is trying to get a garden shredder to work to see if he can quickly shred apples to make cider. We don’t like cider, so it will end up as cider vinegar, which is really good for you.

  1. How to cook neeps: my wife pops one into the microwave for 10 minutes, then inverts it and repeats.

When you take it out the inside is beautifully soft, all ready to be scooped out and served with haggis.

    ……

JH: How do you catch the haggis at this stage of life?
