(1645) Almost evening all.
15. Andy and Slade
I could have held off until after the first two posts tomorrow but somehow, I thought it was better to run it now, plus the question of eras came up earlier. Andy wrote, at 1149:
“Jimbo, I know you like your reaction videos, and they are usually entertaining. This one below was… well, hugely informative and a bit sad. We all grew up with their sound, so… C’mon Feel the Noize!“
Right … the reactor’s question was how he’d never heard of them, yet he’d heard some of the songs, as covers. I’m puzzled about why Slade were never part of my deliberate listening. Yes, we heard them all the time with that Robert Plant type voice … we knew all Plant’s band’s songs, we were into The Yardbirds, The Who, Waterloo Sunset, we knew The Clash from 1976.
When I returned from one of my journeys, we went to the Ammersmith Odeon to see Great Rock n Roll Swindle. We knew Tenpole Tudor, Jona Lewie. But also around were Clapton, Free … it goes on. So why not Slade? Why not Queen later? Why never AC/DC, never Oasis, never Ozzy Whatsisname? Hmmmmm.
I’m thinking the costumes … could never handle clown outfits, bell bottoms, flares. Why was I a strong fan of Dan McCafferty and Nazareth but not Slade? Kiss? Yuk. Adam Ant? Not really.
Plus there were other British artists we loved … Ian Dury, Graham Parker. Fairport Convention, Sandy Denny. Why not Slade? Going back … Eric Burdon, Troggs, Bad Company. I’m thinking maybe we were listening to American bands too. Ramones were big, Steely Dan, Eagles, Santana. Back in Blighty … The Stranglers, with Hughie. Why not Slade? Esp. not Gary Glitter. Going to look up Glam now.
Hmmmm … Bowie … no way. Yet Bryan Ferry we listened to. Genesis no, T Rex no, Yes no, UB40 no, Police no, Traffic not really, ELP yes. Rhyme or reason in those choices? Sweet no, Strawbs no. Joy Division … definitely yes, plus New Order. Think Noddy Holder just screamed, whereas others sang.
Tull yes. Theatrical band though. Hmmmmm. Sex Pistols? No. Wreckless Eric? Yes. Boy George? Never. Mark Knopfler? Yes.
14. Reform have the classic issue facing the whole country
Farage sees himself as head of Tories 2.0, Muslim Party, therefore PM, also wants that gong. Reform members are there only to make that happen. Reform members, the heart of society outside the M25 bubble, good people, simply can’t see it.
