Pub rock

Back to politics around 1800, birthday boy Steve.

Was watching some Chuck Berry and a few other mega-artists … you know what? The egos killed it … everyone playing so straight, terrified to eclipse The Great Man … nah, not for me. I’m speaking here to those who can appreciate 50s to 70s popular. I find Elvis a bore, Stones, Beatles … I’d much prefer a “B” band, just as with a surprisingly good B film …

In fact, this first one call themselves a “wedding band”, you get the idea … everyone could actually play and were enjoying it:

The next we’ve had before … clearly older musos needing a good singer and they found one … enough variation in the music to be listenable for a few sets:

Wedding band, pub rock, whatever … lack of ego, just a good time, get up and shake the legs a bit.

Sat Mat

Admittedly, this is up for Toodles and for those liking Myrna Loy … which in those days were quite a few people across America … there’s a definite screen chemistry, maybe in real life as well … they made a few pictures together, the Thin Man series being the most popular, especially the first two.

Sadly … natch … those first two can’t be found on YT as restored whole films. This below was at the second last, her only outing during the war itself and some rate it lower, many quite high … I quite like it. Review below the filum.

“This entry in the “Thin Man” series is enjoyable in itself, and it also works well as a change-of-pace from the rest of the series, in placing the familiar Nick and Nora characters in a new setting, when Nick returns to his old home town. It makes for a much different atmosphere, since Nick is received quite differently at home than he is in the big city where his crime-solving skills are so renowned.

Some things, of course, are still the same. William Powell is as witty and elegant as always, Myrna Loy is as engaging and as charming as ever, and the mystery that crops up is interesting and enjoyable. The screenplay does a nice job of keeping the best elements of the series while placing Nick in some new situations. The Powell/Loy characterizations of Nick and Nora are so good that when you see them in a somewhat new setting like this, you take an interest in them as you would old friends.

Harry Davenport heads up a very good supporting cast, and he gives one of his many fine character performances as Nick’s father. The relationship is quite believable, and it’s easy to empathize with Nick in his inability to please his father.

For all that this is a lesser-known movie in the “Thin Man” collection, it is quite good. The mystery itself is set up cleverly and efficiently, and it has the same combination of the offbeat and the logical that you hope for in these features. It’s well worth seeking out for anyone who enjoys the “Thin Man” films.”

Saturday solstice [2 to 5]

(0841) Ok, time is charging on. Just a quick note about Redacted’s latest. It needs preserving … a good read too … it stays right there. As long as HQ exists, it does. Therefore, you need to bookmark the post it’s under. Now, if HQ disappears (my constant warning), this does not mean it won’t reappear somewhere else down the track … that’s all I’m saying. It’s designed this way. (0945)

Summer solstice [1]

(0727) Very late start, slept through but then had to attend to pressing matters till now, inc. raw material for this morn at HQ. Sunny window (real window, at home) closed, shady window on another wall open. Ok, item 1 below is long, extended, needs writing though. Next post will have Steve and DAD, after short brek. Cunning table of contents:

*On Redacted and other “longs” from readers … the single, simple reason I can’t “invite authors” into the main HQ posts is security … just that, five way … for the author/contributor/commenter, for me, for the site … as there are other things connected, powering the site, which are incog.

Solution? To provide space so that you can write longs if you like, e.g. the Last Refuge repost, in one of four places, plus OoL … the two main ones being NOWP and to a lesser extent … here. Why “to a lesser extent”? Well look at this for example:

You can see the huge variation in font size in that sshot composing window … the one place we want large font and large composing space is in the composing window … NOWP is vastly better for commenting.

Composing longs at HQ is not fun unles one first composes elsewhere, copies, then pastes in the tiny window.

But WP security then kicks in … rightly so, as they have their own limits on comments. Obvious q is … why don’t I change it? Even change site theme? Answer is … do you really think I’d not have already done so? I myself am caught in a “default” straitjacket which can’t be changed.

Why not blgr/ggl? Think back to July 26th last year. Ghost or other platform? Sorry but WP is the most comprehensive and best for serious blogging, despite the strictures. For now. And they know it too.

**Penseivat and ***Steve … the anecdotal reflections I’m capturing for the navbar sections Quotes and Reader recollections. Trouble is … it can become unwieldy, difficult to navigate, so a certain amount of “take this one, leave that one” is involved, on the run. You can always leave a note for me if you’d like it preserved.

****Central registers … this affects both blog and at home … obviously, a well signposted central place helps anyone seeking to find but … big butt … do you actually want bad players finding, e.g. where your cash is kept, where your most explosive posts can be found?

Obviously not, so what’s the solution? One is using dead tree rather than online but that’s not useful online. Online, I’ve suggested that if you see anything to keep, have a multi-gigs usb stick of your own Amz, PC World, whatever) or even hard drive and copy it there. If you do not bother, dearest reader … I can only say bad luck ole chap because the chance of it surviving at HQ is low … HQ is in bad player crosshairs … the spam attacks alone are insane each day.

*****Toodles and other occasional commenting. Clearly, some comments are just “shorts”, not meant to be more … fine. When they become long and preservable, I’ll preserve some. For example, the Last Refuge repost is way too long, so it stays in place where it is. The backup is at the Last Refuge hisself, see blogrolls.

*******My mindset is that NOWP and HQ are equally valid, with UHC and Jstack one rung below that … but still valid. OoL is a different matter, with Julia. In the morning, I use NOWP as my portal actually, before HQ … that’s how I navigate. That navbar is vital to me too. I find NOWP easier to read, while HQ is our central depository. 6th floor? Never mind … poor joke. …/END.
