Isilme’s garden part one

Beloved and I went for a walk the other day and saw a lovely elder tree festooned with wild roses. It looked amazing and my photo really doesn’t do it justice. There are so many flowers everywhere at the moment with all this lovely sunshine.

Wild roses in the Elder tree

The garden is going crazy. I managed to persuade Beloved to mow the lawn. There are more dandelions on it than blades of grass! And, inexplicably, two raspberry canes – but he dug those up and put them in the border.

Plum clusters

And it is amazing to see the plums! We are going to get a good crop, by the look of it. In fact, I may have to take off some of the little green plums so that the rest will have space to grow bigger. Somewhere I have a recipe to make faux olives from the little plumlets.

Pink strawberry flowers

The strawberries are getting ready to be stunning also. We have pink-flowering strawberries, but they don’t usually give very big fruit. We shall see what happens this year.

Strawberries

  1. Hereabouts everything is awash with elderflower and dog roses. Lurvly.

Yesterday I had my first strawberry straight from the garden – the previous ones had had to be left on a sunny windowsill for a few days.

We ate our first broad beans of the season on Wednesday. Tiny, but that means delicious. You can make them more delish too by chucking bits of the pod into the pot you boil them in and then separating again before guzzling.

We are also in peak rhubarb crumble season.

    ……

    JH: Sounds brilliant.

  2. Our garden hedge is full of elderflowers this year. Not seen it like this for many a long year. I put it down to the wetter weather we had last year and so far this year too. Had our own strawbs at lunch time – not quite enough for two but the Domestic Goddess made an Eton Mess and added blueberries to make up. We’ve been eating our own lettuces for the past couple of weeks along with a plethora of fresh herbs. The tomatoes I planted this year are “Noir de Crimea” just because we fancied a change – nothing political! My favourite time of year when everything is fresh, green and new before summer comes and scorches everything to a crisp. In the flower dept all the roses are blooming – the scent in the evening is nothing less than divine. In my ‘umble opinion 🙂
