“Lloyd Nolan stars as Michael Shayne, a down-on-his-luck P. I. who’s having trouble paying his bills. His luck changes when he’s hired to keep watch over rich girl Phyllis (Marjorie Weaver) who’s been spending too much of daddy’s money lately losing at the gambling house. A simple babysitting job gets complicated when a dead body pops up and Shayne looks like the guilty party.

This was the first in a series of Shayne mysteries starring Nolan, based on books by Brett Halliday. Nolan is very good as the genial Shayne, a decent guy who isn’t afraid to use his fists but prefers using his wits.

I liked that he’s shown to be fallible, making clumsy mistakes like ripping his pants while sneaking around, which helps to humanize him compared to other movie sleuths who never seem to make a misstep. Weaver’s spoiled rich girl act is irritating at first, but her character makes a big turnaround, and Elizabeth Patterson is a delight as Weaver’s detective-story-addict aunt who helps out on the case.

This movie doesn’t do anything groundbreaking, but it knows its lane and travels it well.”

Going to take me awhile to work through Steve’s links. First up:

13. Dim Sims

There aren’t all that many Oz foods I’m dying to try again … not coz they’re bad but because they’re here too, e.g. meat pies, plus some of ours are down there, e.g. Yorkshire puds. But one Oz, sort of Chinese, food is the humble chippy dim sim … still have not decided if I like steamed with soy or fried better.

Best eaten using chopsticks … the little blighters can get quite hot.

Snitats

My last post at N.O. on other than procedural topics was on this below. So here we are again … a thread came up and I’d have been wrong not to s’shoot it.

At this stage, let’s get this clear … I’m no medico and am not advising, medically … I’m presenting this man above who may have been in the biz.

As for me, I trained in a gym twenty years ago plus … didn’t take much to build and retain muscle (apart from steady work of course). These days, post heart attack, i.e. statins et al, plus aging, plus all our other issues, e.g. food poisons, plus being unable to be gym-regular … I can build it about the same but something is obviously acting to reduce muscle mass faster than I’d expect.

And that’s as far as I go with this. Explore for yourself perhaps.

a) A federal Europe is rearing its ugly head with the planned destruction of the nations that comprise it.

b) According to Politico, the French government is considering classifying the social network X (formerly Twitter) as a pornographic site [JH: Politico though being MSM, like BBC and CNN]

c) According to Europe 1, the Italian referendum aimed at facilitating access to nationality for foreigners and abolishing several labor market liberalization laws failed due to insufficient turnout.

d) More than 60 sheep have been saved from being slaughtered in the Rhône department since Thursday. [JH: Is this part of some deathcult festival or something?]

Just repeating, folks … and for DAD too, Andy … the whole point of NOWP, as long as I always signpost it here … is that diverging opinions on different aspects can be encompassed … you only need click over there and get that angle. The other options are HQ comments, UHC-WP, Jstack, X or OoL within this sphere.

25. Just returning to Mon 20 one more time

Mon 5 to 11 was a puzzler as to why it had been trashed by some “agency” or black magic … was nowt to do wi’me. Getting it reinstated took about five clicks. As mentioned in Mon 20, it might have been any of a number of agencies, it might have been on account of the Prevent item or maybe the comment below it.

Point is, we need to carefully choose our hills to die on … this one is too iffy to pin down … low percentage chance of a result for us. If we see a pattern … different other matter.

Monday [20]

I’m going to “retrash” Mon 5 to 11. I’ve had a good look and it seems to me that item 11 is the sticking point … about “Prevent”. The initial trashing might have been Prevent’s doing or QHCG or even WP itself. There was no notification to me … it might even have been benign … someone who saw where it was going and who acted quickly … it’s too unknown at this point … not worth the candle.

”The film version pays its respects to the play… there’s not much camera movement and no music at all. Despite that, the capable cast and brisk pace make this an enjoyable 60 minutes of movie theater. There are a few red herrings thrown in and the culprit could be anyone.”

Monday [15 to 19]

(1152) Happy almost afternoon, people. (1318)
