a. 1988 Olympics in Seoul. Johnson won the gold but was disqualified for doping. The medals were recalled and the record was quashed. Johnson was banned for life. I remember the incident well. I was rooting for Carl Lewis and was greatly disappointed he didn’t win that race despite himself breaking the then US record.

e. Liston was also accused of agreeing to take a dive at the behest of the Mob but the substance on his gloves suggests that he was planning to win, not lose. It was a nasty business either way. Throwing sporting matches always is – dishonours the man, destroys the sport and disrespects the fans who give them life.
