a) Mercosur is the public humiliation of France. Happy times are now over for Europe. The Mercosur deal agreed last week shows an EU forced to choose between protecting its farming sector and opening new markets for its industrial exports….

b) ….But farmers fight back…EU-Mercosur: Farmers protest at the port of Le Havre….

c) As I wrote on AKH’s website the other day…

It’s the same the whole world over,
Isn’t it a bleeding shill;
It’s the rich that get the pleasure,
And the poor that get the bill.

d) Women drivers……A 48-year-old woman’s car caught fire on the A89 motorway near Lyon on Friday, January 9, 2026. She had put engine oil in the radiator instead of coolant. It was a costly mistake.

    Last autumn I renewed my 3yr over 70 driving licence. It was very simple online declaration/form needing only my passport No.and expiring licence details as proof of ID.10 mins approx.
    Today my other half sat at the PC to renew hers. New form! It needed to phone back a verification code, then wanted proof of ID using either a government service user login or she could scan a QR code on her phone to download and install the DVLA app (what’s that?) which would take pics for facial ID checking. Obviously a very deliberate step towards forcing digital ID and smartphones. After an hour of travelling in circles (and learning she could get an ID verification at a main town PO miles away) she gave up, Fortunately they had sent a simple form, like the earlier online page, with the reminder so it went in the post (will it work?). I see loads of news about eyesight checks but nothing about all this new digital crap. I predict loads of OAPs driving without a licence because they can’t understand or navigate this nonsense!

    ……

    JH: Absolutely. Beyond the pale.
