Steve and the Short Sunderland

They were great blokes weren’t they? Proper men, and they were all around us when we were growing up. The reason I chose it is they were doing the same job as my uncle: hunting U-boats. They did it from the air in Sunderland flying boats and Fred did it from the surface as Able-Seaman on a Destroyer: Anti-Submarine Warfare. One of Fred’s medals is the Atlantic Star and for the most part that is where he fought the war in the South-Western Approaches. It may have took his life but the submarine that did for him was eventually sunk by aircraft from RAF Coastal Command. Just like those in the film.

JH: “They were great blokes weren’t they?” Were indeed Steve.
My SNCO at Binbrook worked on the last of the Sunderlands out in the far east. From Sunderlands to Lightnings… Well, at least I have done similar, from Lightnings to… Lancasters.
